Chapter 9

Back in the safety of Elena’s apartment, the adrenaline crash hit Clara like a physical blow. She collapsed onto the kitchen chair, the heavy backpack resting on the table before her. Maya and Lily were sleeping soundly in the small guest bedroom down the hall, blissfully unaware of the danger their mother had just faced.

Marcus pulled the flash drive from his pocket and plugged it into Elena’s laptop. The screen flickered to life, displaying lines of encrypted code that rapidly translated into clean, organized spreadsheets, audio transcripts, and scanned legal documents.

"This is it," Marcus said quietly, leaning back in his chair with a heavy sigh of relief. "Every dirty secret Vance Media has tried to bury for the past twenty years. The safety violations, the illicit payouts, the suppression of child labor complaints, and the engineered bankruptcy of your father’s firm."

Elena poured three cups of strong black coffee, setting one in front of Marcus and one in front of Clara. "Having the evidence is only half the battle, children. If we walk into a standard police precinct or hand this over to local prosecutors, Richard’s legal team will manage to tie it up in injunctions and confidentiality orders for years."

"Then we don't go to the local police," Clara said, her voice hard and resolute. She took a sip of the hot coffee, feeling its warmth steady her nerves. "We take it straight to federal investigators and investigative journalists who specialize in corporate corruption."

"I have a contact at the Chronicle," Marcus offered, tapping the edge of the laptop. "An investigative reporter named David Vance—no relation to the studio moguls, thankfully. He’s been trying to get an inside look at talent agency exploitation practices for over a year. If we hand him this package with unassailable digital verification, he’ll run the story nationwide."

Clara nodded. "Let's do it. But we need to move fast. Once Richard realizes we took those specific files from the vault, he’ll know we have the leverage to destroy him. He won't just use lawyers anymore; he’ll use every dirty trick in his arsenal to discredit us."

"We go public tomorrow morning at a press conference," Elena suggested calmly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp intelligence. "We don't wait for David to write a three-part investigative series. We drop the whole file on a secure public server simultaneously, and invite the media to witness the receipts."

Clara looked at the two people sitting across from her—people who had every reason to stay out of the crossfire, yet chose to stand by her side. A deep sense of gratitude mingled with her fierce maternal determination. They were no longer just running away; they were mounting a counter-attack.
