Chapter 7

The afternoon rain drummed a relentless, heavy tattoo against the massive glass skylights of the Oakridge High gymnasium lobby, where students were gathered for a sudden, unscheduled assembly announcement. The atmosphere was thick with confusion and restless energy. Without explanation, all afternoon classes had been halted at two o'clock, and security guards stood stationed at every exit, their radios crackling with static.
In the center of the lobby, whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through tall grass.
"Did you hear?" a sophomore whispered loudly to her friend. "The football team is getting suspended. All of them."
"No way, that's a rumor," her friend replied skeptically. "Derek Vance is literally going to state next month. The school board would never allow it."
Across the lobby, leaning against a concrete pillar with his arms tightly crossed over his dark hoodie, stood Derek. His face was a mask of cold fury. He had spent the last two hours locked out of his locker, his phone confiscated by the vice principal, and rumors swirling around him like a swarm of angry hornets. He didn't know the exact details, but he knew one name kept echoing through the administrative whispers: Leo Miller.
Derek scanned the crowd until his eyes locked onto Leo, who was standing quietly near the library entrance beside Dr. Morales. Leo’s posture was straight, his green t-shirt partially hidden beneath a borrowed navy zip-up jacket. He wasn't hiding anymore. He met Derek’s murderous glare with a calm, resolute stillness that drove the older boy to the edge of absolute rage.
Derek pushed off the pillar, his boots stomping hard against the polished concrete as he charged directly across the lobby toward Leo. The surrounding students instinctively parted, sensing the violence vibrating just beneath the surface of the moment.
"You little rat," Derek hissed, his voice cutting through the ambient noise as he closed the distance. He towered over Leo, his fists clenched at his sides, his chest heaving with explosive anger. "What did you do? What lies did you tell them?"
Leo didn't step back. He tilted his chin up, maintaining eye contact. "I didn't lie about anything, Derek. The truth doesn't need embellishment."
Before Derek could lunge forward or raise a hand, two security guards intercepted him with practiced efficiency, grabbing him firmly by the upper arms and wrenching him backward.
"Back off, Vance! Step away from the student," one of the guards barked, his voice booming across the lobby.
"Get your hands off me!" Derek roared, struggling against their grip, his face flushing a deep, furious crimson. "You're making a mistake! My dad owns half this town! You can't do this to me!"
His sudden outburst punctured the remaining illusion of his invincibility. Dozens of students stared in stunned silence. The golden boy, the untouchable star quarterback, was thrashing like a cornered animal, screaming threats that no longer carried any weight.
Principal Evans stepped out from the double doors of the administration wing, his face grim and exhausted. He raised a hand, and the PA system crackled to life, silencing the murmurs of the entire gymnasium lobby.

"All students will report directly to the auditorium immediately," Evans announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the speakers. "No exceptions. This is a mandatory school-wide assembly."
As the crowd slowly began to shuffle in the direction of the auditorium, Derek was dragged toward the administrative offices by security, his angry curses fading down the dim hallway. Leo stood frozen for a second, watching him go. The storm had finally broken, and there was no turning back for anyone inside these walls.
