Chapter 3

The glow of the laptop screen illuminated the dark kitchen, casting eerie blue shadows across Leo’s face. It was past midnight, and the house was dead silent except for the low, rhythmic hum of the old refrigerator. Leo’s eyes burned with fatigue, but adrenaline kept him anchored to the hard wooden chair.
The MicroSD card lay plugged into a USB adapter beside the computer. When he had first inserted it, the drive had thrown a wall of corrupted sector errors and hexadecimal gibberish. Most students would have given up, assuming the hardware was fried beyond recovery. But Leo had spent the last two years teaching himself basic scripting and data recovery out of sheer curiosity and a desire to understand how things worked beneath the surface.
He tapped furiously on the keyboard, executing a command-line script designed to bypass corrupted file headers and rebuild the partition table. Lines of green text cascaded down the black terminal window. Reading sector 4096... sector 5120... checksum verified.
With a soft chime, a new folder icon popped up on his desktop. He double-clicked it. Inside were dozens of raw video and audio files, labeled with strange alphanumeric codes. Leo’s heart hammered against his ribs as he clicked the first file.
The video opened with a shaky, high-definition view of the boys' locker room at Oakridge High. The timestamp in the corner indicated it had been recorded just three days ago. Derek was on screen, leaning against a row of lockers, laughing loudly as he leaned over a freshman who was pressed against the wall, trembling. Another clip showed Derek and his friends cornering the school treasurer in the parking lot, demanding cash for "parking protection." File after file revealed a systematic pattern of intimidation, extortion, and targeted cruelty that Derek had spent years hiding behind his charming smile and athletic achievements.
Leo leaned back in his chair, a cold sweat breaking out across his neck. This wasn't just a personal grievance; this was a digital archive of systematic bullying involving multiple students over the course of two years. Derek hadn't just broken Leo's tablet today because of a random whim. Looking closer at the file metadata, Leo realized something staggering: the tablet didn't belong to Derek, nor had it been Derek's originally. It had belonged to Marcus, the student who mysteriously transferred out of Oakridge midway through last semester. Derek must have stolen it, used it to record his exploits, and somehow lost track of it, only to panic when Leo picked it up off a shared library table yesterday morning, mistaking it for his own identical device.

The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Derek hadn't smashed Leo's tablet out of casual malice; he had smashed it because he recognized the device and believed the incriminating card was inside it. He thought he had destroyed the evidence. He had no idea the card was jammed deep within the structural housing, shielded by the bent frame.
Leo stared at the screen, the blue light reflecting in his wide eyes. He had absolute proof now. He could take this straight to Principal Evans tomorrow morning. The nightmare would be over, and Derek would finally face consequences. But as Leo looked at the faces of the terrified students in the videos, a heavy sense of responsibility settled over him. Handing this over to the administration meant blowing open a scandal that would rock the entire school. It wasn't just about his broken project anymore. It was about choosing whether to remain silent or to step directly into the line of fire.
