Chapter 7: The Confrontation in the Kitchen

The sun climbed higher, casting bright, harsh squares of light across the polished marble countertops of the expansive kitchen. Dr. Evans, a kind-eyed pediatrician with graying temples and a reassuring bedside manner, had finished examining Lily upstairs and was now downstairs speaking quietly with Julian near the center island. Lily was resting safely in the sunroom with Mrs. Gable, coloring in a new sketchbook that Julian had brought up from his study.
"The physical injuries are consistent with blunt force trauma and restrictive binding," Dr. Evans said, his voice laced with professional indignation as he closed his leather medical bag. "The bruising on her left arm shows distinct finger-pad patterns, indicating someone grabbed her with considerable force. I have documented everything in this official medical report, complete with photographs and diagnostic notes. This will hold up in any court of law, Julian."
"Thank you, David," Julian said, shaking the doctor’s hand firmly. "I appreciate you coming out on such short notice."
"That’s what friends are for. Keep that little girl safe, Julian. What happened to her is unforgivable."
As Dr. Evans packed up and headed toward the front foyer, Evelyn strolled into the kitchen. She wore large diamond stud earrings that caught the morning light, her blonde hair styled in a flawless blowout. She cast a dismissive glance toward the retreating pediatrician before turning her cool, calculating gaze onto Julian.
"Inviting doctors into the house now? Really playing the dramatic victim, aren't we?" Evelyn remarked, opening the stainless-steel refrigerator to retrieve a bottle of sparkling water.
Julian closed the distance between them, his face a mask of cold fury. "The doctor just finished documenting Lily's injuries, Evelyn. Every single bruise, every single mark. That report, combined with the video and audio footage I captured from the security system, is currently sitting on my lawyer's desk."
Evelyn stopped twisting the cap of the water bottle, her movements freezing for a split second. But she quickly recovered, letting out a sharp, dismissive laugh that sounded entirely forced. "Security footage? Oh, please. You’ve always been paranoid with those cameras. I'm sure you edited something together to suit your fragile narrative. Any competent judge will see right through your pathetic attempt to manufacture grounds for a quick divorce."
"Let the judge decide that," Julian replied steadily. "The sheriff’s deputies should be arriving within the hour with an emergency restraining order and an eviction notice. You have until then to gather your personal clothes and walk out that front door on your own terms. If you resist, you will be escorted off the property in handcuffs."
Evelyn slammed the water bottle down onto the granite countertop, the plastic cracking against the stone as the liquid sloshed over the rim. The mask of calm superiority finally cracked completely, revealing the desperate, manipulative woman beneath.

"You arrogant bastard," Evelyn hissed, stepping right up into Julian’s face, her eyes blazing with malice. "You think you can just discard me like an old piece of trash? After everything I sacrificed to keep up appearances for your precious business associates? You’ll regret this, Julian. I promise you, if I go down, I will make sure you lose everything—your money, your company, and yes, your precious little girl."
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply looked down at her with absolute disgust. "Your threats don't work anymore, Evelyn. Nothing you say can hurt us ever again."
