Chapter 6: The Emergency Exits

Dawn broke over the luxury estate, painting the eastern sky in brilliant hues of amber and violet, but the warm light offered no comfort to the grim atmosphere inside the mansion. Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his master study, staring out across the dew-soaked lawn where Lily had been forced to drag the garbage bag less than twenty-four hours ago. His phone buzzed sharply against the mahogany desk. It was Marcus Vance, his longtime friend and the senior partner at Vance & Sterling Family Law.

"Julian, I received the files you sent over encrypted transmission last night," Marcus said, his voice grave and professional. "I watched the footage. And I’ve read Mrs. Gable’s preliminary statement. This is bad, man. But legally speaking, it’s a goldmine for an emergency ex parte custody filing and an immediate restraining order."

"How fast can we execute this, Marcus?" Julian asked, his tone devoid of any patience. "I want her out of this house, and I want a court order preventing her from coming within five hundred feet of my daughter permanently."

"We can file the paperwork at the courthouse by 9:00 AM," Marcus replied. "A family court judge is already on standby for emergency dockets. But Julian, you need to understand how Evelyn operates. She isn't just going to pack her designer bags and wave goodbye quietly. She has high-priced legal representation of her own—Harrington & Croft. They specialize in dragging out messy divorces and protecting wealthy spouses through aggressive counter-claims."

"Let them try," Julian said coldly. "They don't have the video footage, Marcus. They don't have the audio recordings of her threatening a child with starvation. Let her high-priced lawyers explain that to a judge."

"Agreed. Now, what about Lily? Where is she right now?"

"She's sleeping upstairs under Mrs. Gable's watch. I’m having Dr. Evans come by in an hour to document the physical injuries properly for the medical report we need to attach to the petition."

"Good. Do not let Evelyn leave the property before the sheriff’s deputies arrive with the order, Julian. If she bolts with any high-value assets or attempts to spin a false narrative to the local police about domestic disputes, it could complicate things temporarily. Keep her contained in the house."

"Understood. See you at the courthouse this afternoon, Marcus."

Julian hung up the phone and turned around just as the study door clicked open. Evelyn stepped into the room, looking effortlessly chic in a cream-colored cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. She didn't look like a woman who had just been told to pack her things the night before; she looked entirely composed, almost amused, as if she were hosting a high-society brunch rather than presiding over the collapse of her marriage.

"Really, Julian? Calling lawyers at midnight?" Evelyn asked, taking a slow sip of her coffee while leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk. "You’re making a tremendous mistake. If you think a messy public divorce is going to help your corporate promotion, you are profoundly delusional."

Julian walked over to her, keeping a safe, controlled distance so she couldn't interpret any movement as aggressive, though every fiber of his being screamed to throw her out of the room. "Your reign of terror in this house is over, Evelyn. The authorities are already involved. I suggest you spend your morning packing your personal belongings, because by noon, you won't legally be allowed to step foot on this property."

Evelyn’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a fleeting flash of genuine panic crossing her features before she quickly reasserted her icy mask.

"You think you’re so smart, Julian," she whispered, stepping closer so only he could hear. "You think a few videos will destroy me? I know things about your company’s offshore accounts, Julian. Things that could ruin your career far faster than any family court battle. We can settle this quietly, or we can burn the whole empire down together."
