Chapter 10: The Legal Storm Brews

The conference room on the fourteenth floor of the downtown legal tower offered a sweeping panoramic view of the skyline, but Julian couldn't care less about the scenery. He sat across the polished walnut conference table from Marcus Vance, reviewing the preliminary documents for the permanent custody hearing and divorce settlement. The initial temporary restraining order had successfully kept Evelyn away from the estate for the past week, but Harrington & Croft, Evelyn’s high-priced legal team, had just filed a massive counter-suit demanding fifty percent of the marital assets and joint legal custody, citing Julian’s past business travel as evidence of parental neglect.
"They’re throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, Julian," Marcus said, tapping a stack of legal briefs with his fountain pen. "They know the video and medical evidence makes winning criminal or sole custody on abuse grounds difficult, so they’re attacking your corporate record. They want to paint you as an absentee father who delegated parenting to a stepmother, thereby provoking the domestic friction."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, running a hand through his short dark hair. His jaw was set, his expression completely resolute. "Marcus, my travel records from the past two years show clearly that I was home every weekend and managed my schedule to maximize time with Lily. Furthermore, Mrs. Gable’s sworn affidavit details specific instances of psychological and physical abuse committed by Evelyn while I was away. How can any family court judge look at that evidence and grant her joint custody?"
"They won't," Marcus assured him calmly. "Judge Harrison is notoriously strict when it comes to child welfare. But Harrington & Croft are banking on your desire for a quiet, fast resolution. They want a massive financial settlement to make this whole thing go away quietly before it hits the public tabloids."
"They aren't getting a dime of hush money," Julian stated flatly. "If Evelyn wants to take this to a full public trial, let her. I have the security footage, I have the medical reports, and most importantly, I have Lily in a safe, loving environment where she is finally thriving."
"Good. Because we’re going to file a motion for sole physical and legal custody, along with a permanent injunction barring Evelyn from any contact with Lily whatsoever," Marcus said, sliding a document across the table for Julian’s signature. "Sign here, and we’ll serve their legal team this afternoon."

Julian took the pen and signed his name with firm, deliberate strokes. Every movement felt like a stake driven deeper into the foundation of the nightmare they had just escaped. He thought of Lily drawing pictures of a happy home in the sunroom, smiling without fear for the first time in years. That image alone was worth every legal battle, every corporate challenge, and every penny it would cost to sever ties with Evelyn permanently.
"Once this deposition is filed next Tuesday, Evelyn will have to testify under oath," Marcus added, standing up to shake Julian’s hand. "We’ll be ready for her."
