Chapter 8

The heavy front door of the estate burst open with a resounding thud, and two county sheriff deputies, flanked by a federal marshal in a tactical vest, streamed into the living room. Their movements were swift, practiced, and authoritative.
"Federal Marshal Vance! Nobody move!" the lead officer commanded, his hand resting securely on his holstered firearm as his eyes scanned the room, quickly assessing the standoff between Elena, Julian, and Dorothy.
Julian’s face went pale. The arrogance that had defined his posture moments earlier evaporated entirely. He slowly raised his hands away from his sides, glaring at Elena with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. "This isn't over," he muttered under his breath just as the marshal stepped up to him, snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency.
"Mr. Julian Sterling, you are under arrest for wire fraud, estate tampering, and interstate extortion," the marshal recited mechanically, reading him his rights as they led him toward the front exit. Julian offered no physical resistance, though his parting glare promised legal retribution of the most vicious kind.
As the heavy oak door closed behind them, muffling the sound of the departing deputies and the flash of red and blue lights outside, a profound, suffocating silence settled over the living room. Dorothy Bennett remained seated on the velvet sofa, staring blankly at the empty space where Julian had just stood. The white cardigan she wore seemed too large for her now, as if the stress of the morning had physically diminished her.
Elena walked over to the teak table, carefully placing her leather portfolio down before turning to face the older woman. The professional distance she had maintained all morning felt heavy, but necessary.
"You need to contact your legal counsel immediately, Mrs. Bennett," Elena said, her voice professional yet devoid of harshness. "The district attorney will offer a plea agreement for cooperation regarding Julian’s network, but it requires your full and immediate confession regarding the secondary accounts."
Dorothy looked up slowly, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a profound, crushing exhaustion. "I built Bennett Capital from nothing, Elena. Twenty-five years of my life. And in twenty-five minutes, it's all gone. Every brick of it."
"You built it on a foundation of sand, Dorothy," Elena replied softly, leaning against the back of an armchair. "You chose to protect a fraud because you were afraid of losing your status. But integrity isn't about what people see on an Instagram post or a curated real estate feed. It's what remains when the lights go out and the cameras are turned off."

Dorothy let out a ragged sigh, nodding slowly as the weight of the truth finally settled into her bones. "What happens to the house?"
"It goes back into the Sterling estate trust," Elena answered honestly. "Eventually, the court will liquidate it to reimburse the victims. You won't see a dime of it. Neither will Julian."
