Chapter 6

When Elena’s sedan pulled back onto the gravel driveway of the cliffside estate, a sleek black European sports car was already parked haphazardly beside the teak deck. The driver's side door stood open, and the engine tick-tocked as it cooled in the damp coastal air. Elena grabbed her leather portfolio, checked to ensure her phone was recording audio, and stepped out into the biting fog. The wind had intensified, howling around the corners of the house like a restless spirit.
She approached the sliding glass doors cautiously. Inside the brightly lit living room, Dorothy Bennett was no longer pacing. She was sitting rigidly on the edge of a velvet sofa, while a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal designer suit stood over her, speaking in low, venomous tones. Julian Sterling was in his late thirties, possessing sharp features, cold blue eyes, and an air of entitled arrogance that seemed to fill the entire room.
"You had one job, Dorothy," Julian was saying, his voice carrying clearly through the glass. "Keep the lawyers at bay, stall the probate court, and let the offshore transfers clear. Instead, you let some boutique investigator waltz onto the deck and hand you a revocation notice?"
"I couldn't stop her, Julian," Dorothy’s voice trembled with genuine fear. "Elena Vance is relentless. She has the court order. It's over. We can't hide it anymore."
"Nothing is over until I say it is," Julian snarled, taking a threatening step closer to the older woman. "I spent two years setting up this trust structure. I am not going to let a glorified paper-pusher ruin my inheritance."
Elena slid the glass door open with a firm, deliberate click. The sound made both occupants turn instantly. Julian’s face twisted into an expression of cold fury as he spotted Elena standing on the threshold, her white shirt contrasting sharply against the gloomy fog rolling in behind her.
"Mr. Sterling, I presume," Elena said evenly, stepping into the room with complete composure, projecting an aura of unflinching authority. "You're trespassing on property that is currently under federal injunction. I suggest you step away from Mrs. Bennett."
Julian turned slowly, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the intruder. "You must be the little investigator who doesn't know when to mind her own business. Vance, isn't it? You're playing a very dangerous game with people who have resources far beyond your understanding."

"Resources funded by embezzled estate assets and coordinated extortion," Elena replied without missing a beat, holding up her phone to ensure the recording was capturing every word. "Every statement you're making right now is being logged and transmitted to federal investigators. Your father's estate is frozen, Mr. Sterling. And your shell companies in Santa Monica have already been flagged by the SEC."
Julian let out a sharp, cynical laugh, though a flicker of genuine panic crossed his eyes before he masked it with arrogant disdain. "You have zero jurisdiction here, Ms. Vance. And Dorothy is an uncooperative coconspirator who will go down right alongside me if she breathes a word to anyone."
