Chapter 7

Dorothy buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with quiet sobs. The illusion of control had completely vanished, leaving only the bitter reality of her choices. She looked up at Julian, the man she had tried to protect—or perhaps the man she had foolishly believed would protect her—with eyes full of profound disillusionment.
"I never wanted anyone to get hurt, Julian," Dorothy whispered, her voice cracking. "You promised me the consulting firm would be safe. You promised my investors would be protected."
"Your investors are fools who trusted an aging woman playing society maven," Julian snapped coldly, showing not an ounce of empathy for the woman who had acted as his front. He turned his attention back to Elena, his expression hardening into something predatory. "You think you've won, Ms. Vance. But a signed piece of paper on a clipboard doesn't mean a damn thing if it never reaches the courthouse. Give me the original documents, and we can discuss a quiet resolution that benefits everyone involved."
Elena didn't blink. She planted her feet firmly on the hardwood floor, keeping her body positioned between Julian and Dorothy. "The original documents are already in the hands of the federal district attorney in San Francisco, Mr. Sterling. My brother Marcus uploaded the encrypted files five minutes before I walked through that door. You can't intimidate your way out of federal wire fraud and estate tampering."
Julian’s facade of cool indifference finally shattered. A dark flush of rage crept up his neck, and he took a sudden, aggressive step forward, closing the distance between them with alarming speed. "You arrogant little bitch," he hissed, his hand reaching out instinctively toward Elena’s portfolio as if to wrench it from her grip.
Before Julian’s hand could make contact, the sound of flashing blue lights suddenly painted the fog outside the floor-to-ceiling windows in pulsating shades of crimson and azure. Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, growing louder by the second as local sheriff deputies and federal marshals navigated the winding coastal road toward the cliffside estate.

Julian froze, his hand hovering in the air. He looked toward the windows, then back at Elena, whose expression remained entirely calm, though her heart pounded against her ribs. The timing was absolute perfection—Marcus’s coordination with local law enforcement had paid off precisely when it mattered most.
"Looks like your ride has arrived, Mr. Sterling," Elena said quietly, stepping back slightly to give the arriving officers a clear line of sight through the glass doors. "Shall we wait for them on the deck, or would you prefer to discuss your inheritance from the back of a squad car?"
