Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Study

Julian didn’t move for three long seconds. The accusation hung in the humid kitchen air, thick and suffocating like the flour dust settling on the marble. His mind raced back through the endless nights of grief, analyzing every servant, every security guard, and every business associate who had crossed the threshold of the Barker estate. If someone inside this house had betrayed Elena, it meant the enemy had been sleeping under their roof while he wept over her empty pillow.

“Names, Martha,” Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy register that brooked no argument. “Give me names, or I will tear this mansion down to its foundation stone by stone.”

“I don’t have a name,” Martha replied, her voice steadying as she met his fierce gaze. “Only a trail. Look at the security logs from the night she disappeared. The perimeter cameras were never hacked from the outside. The override code was punched in from the master study terminal on the third floor.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed further. Only two people possessed the biometric clearance to access that terminal: himself, and Arthur Vance, his own estranged younger brother who managed the estate’s domestic accounts. Arthur had claimed he was in London on business that entire week, providing an airtight alibi that Julian’s own security team had verified months ago.

“Arthur was abroad,” Julian stated, though the conviction in his voice was beginning to crack.

“Was he?” Martha countered, reaching into her pocket once more to pull out a small, tarnished silver cufflink she had swept up from beneath the study desk the morning after Elena vanished. It bore the distinct family crest, an ornate interlocking ‘V’. “I found this tucked behind the radiator in the study. You wear gold, Mr. Vance. Your brother was the only one who wore silver.”

Julian stared at the metal object in her palm. The weight of the betrayal was crushing, pressing down on his chest until it was difficult to draw a full breath. Arthur had always resented Julian’s control of the family empire, but sabotage and murder? The thought made his blood run cold.

“Where are my daughters?” Julian asked suddenly, his paternal instincts overriding his desire for immediate vengeance.

“Safe upstairs,” Martha answered quickly. “But they aren’t the only ones in this house right now.”

Julian froze, his muscles tensing for action as a faint floorboard creak echoed from the dark hallway outside the kitchen.

“What do you mean?” Julian whispered, his hand sliding slowly toward the heavy side pocket of his suit jacket where a concealed firearm rested.

“Someone has been walking through the east wing every night at midnight,” Martha whispered back, her face turning pale. “And tonight is midnight.”
