Chapter 10 - The Nanny’s True Colors

The subterranean vault grew deathly still, the hum of the cooling fans sounding like a swarm of angry hornets in the confined space. Julian slowly turned his gaze away from the female intruder and fixed his eyes entirely on Martha. The thirty-five-year-old nanny stood frozen beside the server rack, her hands still resting on the metal casing, her starched white cuffs contrasting sharply against the dark machinery.
“Is that true, Martha?” Julian asked, his voice disturbingly calm, devoid of the explosive rage he had exhibited moments earlier. That terrifying stillness was far more dangerous than any shout.
Martha didn't look away. Her grey uniform seemed to swallow the dim amber light as she slowly lifted her chin, the professional subservience entirely vanishing from her posture. The timid, panic-stricken nanny who had dropped her flour-dusted hands in horror just hours ago was gone, replaced by a woman of steel-nerved composure.
“Yes, Mr. Vance,” Martha said, her voice steady and clear, completely lacking its previous tremor. “Every word of it.”
Julian’s hand drifted back toward his empty holster before he remembered he had lost the weapon during the scuffle. He didn’t need it. His towering frame and coiled muscles were weapon enough.
“You lied from the very first day you stepped into this house,” Julian stated, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. “You weren’t hired to watch my daughters. You were planted here to monitor me.”
“I was planted here to ensure the transition went smoothly,” Martha corrected, holding her ground without flinching. “When Elena decided to step out of the spotlight and let the world believe she was a victim of foul play, she needed someone inside the house who understood her protocols, someone who could protect the girls from the real predators hunting her empire.”
“Her empire?” Julian scoffed, a dark, cynical laugh escaping his lips. “This is my company. My name is on the building.”
“Your name is on the stationery,” the female intruder interjected, stepping up beside the console with a cold smirk. “My name is Sarah, by the way, since introductions are overdue. And for the record, Julian, Elena owned seventy-one percent of the voting shares through a web of offshore trusts you never bothered to audit. You were the golden boy CEO. She was the hand that pulled the strings.”
Julian looked between the two women, the sheer magnitude of the deception washing over him. Fourteen months of mourning, fourteen months of tearing his life apart trying to find a ghost, all while the woman he loved had orchestrated a masterclass in corporate and domestic betrayal.
“If she wanted out, why leave the girls?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking with genuine paternal anguish. “Why leave them in this house with me if I was just a pawn?”
“Because she knew you loved them,” Martha answered softly, a flicker of genuine empathy softening her hard features for the first time. “No matter what else she was, Elena was their mother. She knew you would protect them with your life, even if you couldn’t protect her from herself.”
Before Julian could process the confession, a sharp, piercing alarm began to wail overhead, vibrating through the stone ceiling of the subterranean vault.
Sarah’s eyes widened as she looked up at the ceiling monitors. The live feeds from the upstairs hallways were suddenly blinking red, overlaid with bold warning text: PERIMETER BREACH – SECTOR FOUR.

“Arthur,” Sarah whispered, her face draining of color. “He’s back.”
