Chapter 12 - Collision in the Dark

The master study was pitch black, save for the faint, intermittent flashes of lightning illuminating the rain-streaked windows. Julian stepped out from behind the pivoting bookshelf, his senses razor-sharp as he listened intently for any sound in the corridor outside. Behind him, Martha emerged quietly, holding the heavy iron fireplace poker like a short spear.
The heavy oak door of the study was still locked from the outside, the deadbolt securely engaged. But Arthur didn’t need to pick the lock; he had the master override code burned into his memory.
Click.
The deadbolt slid back with a metallic snap. The heavy door began to swing inward, letting in the dim amber light of the hallway sconces, which had somehow remained on despite Sarah’s digital lockout in the vault below.
Julian stepped behind the open door, his massive frame melting into the heavy shadows of the drapery. He motioned for Martha to drop low behind the mahogany desk.
A tall figure stepped into the study, draped in an expensive cashmere overcoat, his damp short hair slicked back from his forehead. It was Arthur Vance. He carried a sleek leather briefcase identical to the one Julian had dropped on the marble floor fourteen months ago—the exact symbol of corporate dominance and family betrayal. Arthur paused, sniffing the air as if he could smell the lingering scent of Turkish tobacco and human presence in the room.
“I know you’re here, Julian,” Arthur called out, his voice smooth, arrogant, and laced with a chilling disdain. “You always were a sentimental fool. Mourning a wife who used you as a stepping stone while I built the real empire.”
Julian didn’t answer. He waited, letting the silence stretch until Arthur’s shoulders tensed with uncertainty.
“You’re out of your depth, little brother,” Arthur continued, taking another slow step toward the center of the room, his eyes scanning the dark corners. “Elena didn't want a partner. She wanted a shield. And when you stopped being useful, she walked away. Just like I’m going to walk away with everything else.”
That was the mistake. The moment Arthur lowered his guard to gloat, Julian moved.
With explosive force, Julian lunged from the shadows, slamming into Arthur’s side with the momentum of a freight train. The two men crashed hard against the mahogany desk, sending the crystal ashtray and scattered papers flying across the Persian rug. The leather briefcase slipped from Arthur’s hand, bursting open to reveal stacks of bearer bonds and digital hard drives.
Arthur grunted, fighting back with desperate strength, swinging a heavy silver-ringed fist that caught Julian squarely across the jaw. Julian tasted copper, but the pain only fueled his cold, calculated fury. He pinned his brother against the edge of the desk, his forearm pressing hard against Arthur’s throat.

“Where is she, Arthur?” Julian snarled, his voice a lethal whisper inches from his brother’s terrified face. “Where is Elena?”
