Chapter 15 - The Final Echo

Jax froze instantly, every muscle in his massive frame locking up as the cold steel barrel pressed harder against his vertebrae. The chaos of the police sirens and shouting paramedics seemed to fade into a distant, muffled hum.

"Drop the flash drives, Jax. Right onto the pavement, nice and slow," a chilling, unfamiliar voice whispered directly into his ear from the dense shadows of the ambulance overhang.

Jax didn't move. He kept his eyes locked on Sarah through the rear glass doors of the ambulance as she tried to sit up, her eyes widening in sheer horror as she saw the silhouette of the man standing directly behind Jax.

"You're surrounded by state troopers, friend. You take this shot, and you won't make it ten feet off this property," Jax replied, his voice frighteningly calm as his hand slid slowly toward his tactical vest pocket where the drives were hidden.

"The troopers are busy managing the corporate fallout. A stray bullet in the chaos is easy to explain away," the operative hissed, pressing the trigger guard harder against Jax's neck. "Give me the drives."

Jax slowly reached into his pocket, his fingers curling around the two matte-black USB drives. With a sudden, explosive twist of his muscular body, he ducked low and spun around, driving his elbow upward with devastating force.

The heavy blow connected squarely with the operative's jaw, sending a sickening crunch echoing through the air as the man stumbled backward. The suppressed pistol flew from his hand, clattering onto the asphalt just as two state troopers turned the corner of the ambulance, weapons drawn and locked onto the scene.

"Drop your weapon! Federal agents! Stay where you are!" the lead trooper roared, rushing forward and tackling the staggering operative to the ground, slapping heavy restraints onto his wrists in a matter of seconds.

The adrenaline finally drained out of Jax's body, leaving him standing breathless beneath the flashing red and blue lights of the emergency vehicles. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the two USB drives, and handed them directly to the lead federal agent who stepped forward to secure the evidence.

"Secure chain of custody. Everything you need to dismantle the entire corporate syndicate is right here," Jax said, his voice steady and unwavering.

The agent nodded, sliding the drives into an evidence pouch before offering Jax a respectful nod. "You saved a lot of lives tonight, Mr. Vance."

Jax turned away from the flashing lights and walked toward the open back of the ambulance where Sarah and Lily were waiting. Lily scrambled down from the step, running straight into his arms and burying her face in his black shirt with a soft, happy sob.

Jax knelt down, wrapping his powerful arms around the little girl and looking up at Sarah, whose smile finally banished the last dark shadow of the night. The nightmare was over, and for the first time in a very long time, they were truly safe.
