Chapter 13 - The Standoff at the Perimeter

The harsh glare of the sedan’s headlights bathed the gravel road in stark white light, casting long, distorted shadows across the perimeter fence. Jax came to an abrupt halt, his boots skidding across the loose stones. He carefully lowered Sarah onto a grassy patch beside the road, shielding both her and Lily behind his massive frame with calculated precision.

"Put the gun down, Elena. It's over. The drives are already backed up to a secure remote server," Jax lied smoothly, his deep voice cutting through the hum of the engine with chilling authority.

"Don't lie to me!" Elena shrieked, her finger tightening visibly around the trigger of the automatic pistol. Her face was twisted into an unrecognizable mask of panic and rage. "Nobody uploads anything from a private offline network! Hand them over right now, or the little girl watches her mother take a bullet!"

Lily let out a muffled sob, burying her face into the back of Jax's black shirt. "Don't let her hurt Mommy, Jax..."

"She isn't going to hurt anyone, Lily," Jax murmured softly, his dark eyes never leaving the wavering barrel of Elena's weapon.

Behind Elena, the driver's side door of the sedan remained shadowed, the tinted window rolled halfway down. A gloved hand tapped rhythmically against the metal frame of the car door—a silent, chilling countdown managed by someone else sitting inside the vehicle.

Elena glanced nervously back toward the car, her voice rising in hysteria. "Hurry up, Jax! They're waiting! Hand over the flash drives or we all die here tonight!"

"You're the only one who's going to prison, Elena," Jax said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "Or worse. Do you really think the people backing you are going to leave loose ends once the police arrive?"

Elena froze, her expression flickering with sudden, agonizing doubt as she processed his words. The rhythmic tapping from the sedan stopped instantly.

"What... what are you talking about?" Elena stammered, her gaze darting between Jax and the tinted window of the car behind her.

Before she could turn back to check the vehicle, the rear door of the sedan flew open with sudden violence, and a heavily armed operative emerged from the interior shadows, raising a weapon directly toward Elena's back.

Jax reacted with blinding speed. He lunged forward, grabbing Elena by the wrist and violently wrenching her arm upward just as the operative inside the car pulled the trigger.

A deafening gunshot split the night air, and Elena screamed as a bullet grazed her shoulder, sending her crashing hard onto the gravel road.
