Chapter 7 - The Sniper's Crosshairs

The red laser dot burned against the grey fabric of Clara’s shirt like a brand of impending execution. She froze instantly, every muscle locking into place as a cold sweat broke out across the back of her neck.

"Don't even think about moving an inch," a gravelly, disembodied voice hissed from the shadows behind a stack of rusted spare turbines at the far end of the catwalk.

Clara slowly raised her hands, palms out, signaling surrender while using her body to shield Leo from the shooter's direct line of sight. The boy was shaking violently, his breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He gripped the two gold necklaces so tightly that the delicate metal chains bit deep into the flesh of his small palms.

"We're unarmed," Clara called out, keeping her voice meticulously calm and level to prevent the hidden sniper from panicking. "There's a child here. Let him go, and we'll cooperate."

"Director Vance sends her regards," the sniper replied coldly, the sound of his heavy combat boots echoing against the metal grating as he closed the distance between them. "And she specifically requested the boy and the chains intact. You are completely expendable, Clara."

Out of the corner of her eye, Clara tracked the reflection of the sniper in the polished steel surface of the pressure tank beside them. He was tall, wearing a dark tactical hoodie, his face half-obscured by a black balaclava. He held a suppressed carbine leveled straight at her forehead, his finger resting lightly on the trigger guard. He was entirely focused on Clara, completely underestimating the resourcefulness of a terrified, desperate child.

"Leo," Clara whispered under her breath, enunciating every syllable without moving her lips. "When I count to three, drop behind the tank and run for the stairs."

"I won't leave you," Leo whimpered, tears spilling over his bruised lids once again.

"You have to. Save your father," Clara murmured back fiercely. "One... two..."

The sniper took another step closer, raising his rifle butt to strike Clara across the face and knock her unconscious.

"...Three!" Clara shouted, suddenly dropping flat onto the metal grating and sweeping her leg out in a vicious, sweeping arc that caught the sniper completely off guard.

The man tripped over her legs with a heavy curse, his rifle discharging harmlessly into the industrial ceiling, sending a shower of sparks raining down across the catwalk. At the exact same second, Leo scrambled like lightning beneath the pressure tank, darting down the spiral steel staircase that led directly toward the lower loading docks and the control booth where his father was being held.

The sniper cursed violently, shoving Clara aside with a brutal backhand that sent her crashing hard into the iron railing, winding her completely. He recovered his footing with terrifying speed, leveling his carbine toward the descending staircase where Leo had just vanished.

"You stupid bitch," the sniper snarled, stepping past Clara to take aim at the fleeing child.

Before he could pull the trigger, a heavy iron wrench came flying out of the dark shadows of the upper rafters, striking the side of the sniper's helmet with a sickening clang that knocked him backward off the catwalk. He plummeted twenty feet down into the empty cargo bay below, hitting the concrete with a dull, devastating thud.

Clara clutched her bruised ribs, gasping for air as she looked up into the dim rafters. Standing on a steel beam above was Marcus, blood dripping from a gash on his forehead, holding a second heavy wrench in his scarred hand. He looked down at Clara with a completely unreadable expression, then pointed a bloody finger toward the control booth below.

"Go," Marcus rasped hoarsely, before turning and disappearing into the ventilation network above.

Clara didn't wait to question her enemy’s bizarre change of heart. She scrambled down the spiral staircase, sprinting across the sprawling concrete floor toward the control booth where Arthur and Leo were now desperately trying to force the heavy reinforced door open.
