Chapter 12 - The Final Confrontation in the Dark

The figure blocked the light of the master breaker panel completely. As the tactical floodlight strapped to his shoulder flickered on, the scarred, familiar face of Marcus came into sharp, agonizing focus. He didn't look like an enemy anymore; his breathing was ragged, his clothes stained with soot and blood from the collapse of the storm shelter, and his eyes carried an unbearable weight of shared trauma.
"Don't do it, Arthur," Marcus rasped, his voice trembling as he kept the suppressed pistol leveled at Arthur’s chest. "If you trip that master breaker, the emergency surge will backfeed through the local grid and detonate every neural suppression chip buried within a five-mile radius—including the one inside Leo’s head."
Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stepped between Marcus and the father and son. "What are you talking about? He has to pull the switch to stop Vance’s broadcast!"
"There's another way," Marcus said, lowering his weapon just an inch while keeping a wary eye on the door behind them where the plasma torch was continuing to chew through the vault hinges. "Vance isn't broadcasting from the hospital anymore. She's right here in the facility. She's standing in the upper communications hub, waiting for us to trigger the grid so she can download the master data files directly to her offshore servers."
Arthur stared at Marcus, his jaw tight as he weighed the impossible choices before him. "If we go up there, we walk right into her trap."
"If we stay here and pull the switch, my son dies," Arthur said, his voice cracking with raw, unbearable paternal anguish as he looked down at Leo, who was clutching his temples again as a low, piercing tone began ringing faintly in his ears.
