Chapter 6

The private drawing room was dimly lit, illuminated only by the amber glow of wall sconces and the ambient light filtering through heavy velvet drapery. Beatrice Vance stepped through the double doors with her chin held high, her emerald gown rustling against the parquet floor. She expected a confrontation between family members, perhaps an emotional plea from Elena or a scolding from the estate patriarch. Instead, she found Julian standing firmly by the fireplace, his sharp black suit and purple shirt projecting absolute authority, while Clara stood near the mahogany writing desk, holding the dark brown luxury handbag with steady hands.

Beatrice’s eyes darted from Julian to Clara, a flash of cold realization crossing her features. She crossed her arms, adopting a defensive posture, and directed a scathing look at Elena, who had just entered behind her. "What is the meaning of this charade, Elena? Have you lost your mind, dragging household staff into family business? And why is that maid still on the property?" Beatrice’s voice dripped with aristocratic disdain, attempting to re-establish her dominance through sheer intimidation.

Julian did not raise his voice; his tone was level, authoritative, and chillingly calm. "The maid remains on the property, Ms. Vance, because she is innocent. And you are the one who requires an audience." Julian tapped the screen of the tablet he held, waking it from sleep mode to display the high-definition still frame of Beatrice planting the diamond necklace into the handbag. The image projected clearly onto the surface of the polished wooden table via a portable wireless projector Julian had set up beforehand.

Beatrice stared at the projection, her face draining of color. The sophisticated corporate facade cracked completely, exposing the panic beneath. "This is a forgery," Beatrice hissed, her voice rising in pitch despite her efforts to maintain control. "A digital manipulation. Anyone with basic software can fake a security feed. You expect me to believe this trash over my own word?" Julian stepped forward, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "It's not a forgery, Ms. Vance. It's authenticated by cryptographic checksums directly from the estate's server. Furthermore, the acoustic sensors in the gallery captured the sound of your distinct bracelets clinking against the leather as you dropped the necklace."

Clara stepped forward into the pool of light, her voice soft but entirely clear. "You didn't just try to steal, Ms. Vance. You tried to destroy me so no one would look at the books." Beatrice spun around, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "Shut your mouth, you little nobody!" she snapped, dropping her aristocratic pretense entirely. The sudden outburst echoed off the high ceiling of the drawing room, shattering the illusion of her composure once and for all.

Elena watched her cousin with a profound sense of disgust. The illusion of family solidarity, which Elena had spent her entire life protecting, was shattered into a thousand irreparable pieces. She realized that Beatrice was not merely a thief; she was a predator who viewed everyone around her as disposable collateral. Julian stood ready, holding the digital evidence packet that would soon be handed over to the authorities, while Clara stood tall, having reclaimed her dignity in the very room where they had tried to strip it away.
