Chapter 4

Back in the quiet sanctuary of the estate's private study, Julian laid out the blueprint for confronting Beatrice Vance. The room smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and faint pipe tobacco. A single brass desk lamp cast a warm pool of light over a sheaf of printed transaction logs and still-frame captures from the security cameras. Clara sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, clutching a cup of chamomile tea that Julian had insisted she drink to steady her nerves. Elena paced near the tall French doors, her heels clicking softly against the Persian rug as she processed the betrayal of her own blood.
"Beatrice thinks she has won," Julian said, his voice steady as he tapped a finger against the printed photo of Beatrice dropping the diamond necklace into the handbag. "She assumes Elena’s volatile temper would ensure Clara’s immediate dismissal and subsequent arrest, effectively burying the evidence in police bureaucracy for months. By the time anyone audited the chain of custody, the necklace would be gone, and Clara would be the scapegoat."
Clara took a small sip of the tea, the warmth easing the lingering tightness in her chest. She looked up at Julian with wide, intelligent eyes. "Why me, Mr. Thorne? Out of all the staff in the house, why choose to frame a maid who only handles the gallery cleaning?" Julian offered a grim, knowing smile. "Because you are invisible to them, Clara. To people like Beatrice, staff members are part of the architecture. You don't have powerful friends, and you don't have legal representation on retainer. In their cynical calculus, a poor girl is the easiest casualty in a rich person's war."

Elena stopped pacing and turned to face Clara, her expression heavy with guilt. "I played right into her hands," Elena whispered, her voice tight with self-reproach. "I saw the bag, I saw you standing near it, and my mind immediately jumped to the worst possible conclusion. I was so terrified of scandal that I manufactured one of my own." Clara set the teacup down on a small side table, the porcelain making a soft clink against the wood. "Fear makes people cruel, Ms. Vance," Clara said softly, her voice carrying a surprising depth of maturity. "But it doesn't excuse what you said."
Julian checked his gold wristwatch, noting that the west wing gala was reaching its peak attendance. The timing was critical. If they waited too long, Beatrice might check the security logs herself, discover the blind spot had been compromised, and flee the estate before the trap could be sprung. Julian stood up, buttoning the top button of his sharp black suit, and looked at the two women. The plan required Elena to lure Beatrice into the private drawing room under the guise of discussing the missing necklace, while Julian and Clara would wait with the digital and physical evidence ready to deploy at the precise psychological moment.
