Chapter 15 - The Final Vow

The dazzling spotlight pinned them against the asphalt, turning the rain into needles of white fire. Two tactical vehicles screeched around the corner, boxing in the sedan from both sides of the alley.
Clara looked at Julian in panic. "Marcus called in private contractors! We're trapped!"
Julian didn't panic. He reached into his inner vest pocket and pulled out the slim USB drive Lily had handed him at the altar hours ago. He didn't plug it into the car. Instead, he held it up toward the spotlight, letting the helicopter pilot see the glint of metal.
Then, Julian pulled a small wireless transmitter from his cufflinks—a prototype distress beacon connected directly to federal law enforcement networks, something he had engineered for his corporate security years ago. He depressed the micro-switch.
Within seconds, the blare of city sirens multiplied tenfold. From every intersection leading into the industrial district, blue and red emergency lights illuminated the fog. A dozen unmarked federal interceptor vehicles, backed by SWAT vans, surged into the alleyway, cutting off Marcus’s tactical contractors before they could even raise their weapons.
Overhead, two police helicopters joined the airspace, ordering Marcus's transport chopper to cut its engines and land immediately.
"It's over, Marcus!" Julian shouted through the storm, his voice echoing off the brick walls. "The moment Lily gave me this drive, the automated failsafe uploaded everything to the Department of Justice! Your accounts, Arthur's safe houses, every single transaction!"
Above them, Marcus’s helicopter drifted helplessly before slowly setting down in a nearby empty parking lot under the heavy barrels of federal rifles.
Julian turned his back on the chaos, walking over to the sedan. He opened the door, kneeling on the wet asphalt beside Elena and Lily. Elena reached out, her trembling, scarred hand finding Julian’s cold fingers. Lily leaned against them both, safe in the circle of their embrace.
"Is it finished?" Elena asked, tears shining in the red and blue flashing lights.
Julian looked at his daughter, then at the woman he had mourned for five agonizing years. He smiled softly, shaking his head.

"No," Julian replied, his voice filled with quiet, unbreakable resolve. "Our lives are just beginning."
Beside them, the radio in the police cruiser crackled to life with an urgent dispatch: Arthur Vance’s private yacht had just been intercepted at the maritime border, but Arthur was not on board. The manhunt was far from over.
