Chapter 14 - The Convergence

Sirens wailed in the distance as the zodiac scraped against the concrete boat ramp near the 5th Street industrial canal. Julian carried Elena ashore, wrapping his soaked tuxedo jacket around her shivering shoulders.
Two blocks away, the black sedan was still parked under the shadow of the old textile warehouse. Julian approached cautiously, his hand on the empty pistol tucked into his waistband. Through the rain-streaked glass, he saw Clara sitting in the front passenger seat, while in the back, Lily was watching the street, holding her knees to her chest.
When the rear door opened, Lily froze. Her eyes widened, tears instantly spilling over her eyelashes.
"Mom?" she whispered, her small voice breaking.
Elena collapsed onto the back seat, pulling Lily into a desperate, weeping embrace, burying her face in the girl's damp curls. "My baby... my brave little girl... I'm here. I'm here."
Julian stood outside in the rain, watching the two of them, a heavy tear cutting through the grime on his face. He looked at Clara, who sat silently in the front seat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, waiting for her fate.
"Thank you, Clara," Julian said quietly. "For staying."
Clara looked up, her face pale, a bitter smile touching her lips. "I spent five years being a coward, Julian. I just wanted to do one thing right."
Before Julian could answer, the night sky was torn open by the deafening roar of helicopter blades. A massive black transport chopper circled overhead, its high-powered spotlight locking onto their car with blinding intensity.

Through the helicopter's external loudspeaker, Marcus’s frantic voice boomed over the wind: "Julian! You think you won? You have nowhere left to hide! Hand over the drive, or none of you survive the night!"
