Chapter 1 - The Screen of Truth

The ballroom held its breath, the silence thicker than the heavy velvet drapes flanking the arched French windows. Julian stood rooted beside the altar, his fingers slipping from Clara’s cold, trembling hand. On the massive projection screen suspended behind the bridal arch, the footage played on an unforgiving loop. It wasn't an innocent slideshow of courtship; it was grainy security footage taken inside Julian’s private study three weeks prior.
Clara appeared on screen, clutching a slim USB flash drive and methodically emptying the contents of Julian’s steel safe. Beside Julian, Clara took an involuntary step back, the delicate lace of her gown rustling like dead leaves. Her lips parted, pale and dry, trying to form an excuse that died in her throat.
Seven-year-old Lily remained at the DJ podium, her small fingers gripping the heavy microphone. Her hazel eyes never left Julian’s face. She didn't look malicious or triumphant; she merely looked tired, like a soldier delivering bad news from the frontlines.
"Julian, listen to me," Clara pleaded, her voice trembling over the stunned gasps of high-society guests. She reached out, her manicure catching the amber glow of the crystal chandeliers. "It's not what it looks like. I was framed. Someone forced me to take those documents!"
Julian turned his head slowly, his jaw ticking beneath trimmed stubble. His eyes, usually warm and welcoming, had hardened into shards of flint. He looked down at the woman he was about to swear his life to, then past her, looking at the child who had just shattered his world.
"Who forced you, Clara?" Julian’s voice cut through the cavernous room, dangerously quiet. "And why did a child have the key to expose you?"

Before Clara could answer, the audio from the projector surged again. A voice echoed from the speakers—rough, muffled, and chillingly familiar. Julian froze. He recognized the man speaking on the recording, a man who had supposedly died five years ago.
