Chapter 7

The small glass vial slipped from Elena’s fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor with a sharp crack, releasing a pungent, chemical scent that immediately burned the back of Arthur’s throat. Sedative. Fast-acting and completely untraceable.
"You psychotic—" Arthur muttered, wrenching her arm back against her side.
Elena didn't scream or panic; her eyes remained cold and calculating even as she stumbled backward against the wall. "You'll never make it to the road, Arthur," she rasped, a sickening smile returning to her face. "The security gates are locked from the main terminal. You're trapped inside the estate."
"Come on, Lily!" Arthur shouted, grabbing the leather duffel bag with one hand and Lily’s small hand with the other.
They sprinted down the remaining length of the service corridor toward the laundry room exit, which opened directly into the overgrown brush behind the property rather than the main driveway. Behind them, Elena’s voice echoed sharply through the quiet house, no longer calm, but ringing with absolute fury as she triggered the estate's internal alarm system. High-pitched sirens wailed overhead, slicing through the afternoon air and turning their quiet escape into a desperate race against time.
Arthur threw his shoulder against the heavy wooden laundry door, the old latch snapping open under the force. Cool, damp air rushed in to meet them as they tumbled out into the overgrown garden, past the tall green hedges where this nightmare had seemingly begun just hours before. The thick foliage provided immediate cover from the security cameras mounted along the main roofline, but the blaring sirens made stealth nearly impossible.
"Keep running, don't look back!" Arthur urged, pulling Lily through the thorny brush that scratched at their clothes and skin.
They scrambled over a low stone retaining wall at the back of the property line, dropping down into the muddy drainage ditch that ran parallel to Ridge Road. The cold mud sucked at Arthur’s dress shoes, tearing the leather, but he didn't care. He hoisted Lily up the opposite bank, then hauled himself up behind her, their chests heaving as they pressed flat against the trunk of a massive oak tree.
Through the gaps in the foliage, they could see the estate's security lights sweeping across the lawn. A pair of private security guards in black uniforms emerged from the main gate, flashlights cutting blinding beams through the gathering dusk.

"They're heading toward the front access," Arthur whispered, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "We need to move north along the ditch line before they sweep the perimeter."
Lily nodded bravely, wiping mud from her cheek, her small backpack securely fastened. Together, they crept deeper into the shadows of the tree line, heading toward the old mill where their only hope of escape waited in the dark.
