Chapter 6

Elena stood there in the dim light of the back hallway, no longer wearing her sunglasses, her blonde hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She wasn't holding a weapon, but her posture radiated a terrifying, immovable authority. She crossed her arms, leaning slightly against the wooden doorframe that led directly to the detached garage.
"I thought I was clear about the midnight flight, Arthur," Elena said, her voice eerily calm. "Why are you sneaking around my home like a common thief?"
Arthur instinctively pushed Lily slightly behind him, his hand gripping the strap of the heavy leather duffel bag. "This isn't your home, Elena. It’s a cage. And we are walking out."
"You think you can just leave?" Elena smiled, a thin, humourless parting of her lips. "Where will you go? Your corporate accounts have already been frozen by my father's legal team as of twenty minutes ago. Your credit cards will decline at the first swipe. You are completely untethered, Arthur. Without my family's backing, you and this child are legally and financially nonexistent."
Arthur didn't flinch. He had anticipated financial sabotage; it was standard protocol for the elite circles Elena’s family traveled in. That was precisely why the duffel bag contained physical cash and bearer bonds that bypassed the digital banking grid entirely.
"Money isn't everything, Elena," Arthur said steadily. "Freedom is."
"Freedom is an illusion sold to people who don't understand power," Elena countered, stepping forward one deliberate step. "Look at her, Arthur. Look at what she is. She has my blood, my temperament. She needs structure, discipline, and correction. You are rewarding weakness by letting her run away from her potential."
Lily whimpered, clutching Arthur’s coat tighter. "I don't want to be like her, Dad. Please."
Arthur locked eyes with his wife, seeing the absolute void where maternal affection should have resided. To Elena, Lily was not a daughter; she was a project, an extension of her own obsession with perfection and control.

"Step aside, Elena," Arthur warned, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a weight that made her hesitate for a fraction of a second.
Instead of moving, Elena reached slowly into the pocket of her white dress. The motion was deliberate, designed to provoke. Arthur reacted instantly, dropping the heavy duffel bag and lunging forward to grab her wrist before she could pull out whatever was hidden inside.
