Chapter 4

Arthur held his ground, his hand unconsciously brushing against the dark leather duffel bag he had left resting by the door. Elena stepped closer, the scent of lavender and sharp citrus perfume filling the small bedroom. She didn't look at Lily; her pale blue eyes remained locked on Arthur, assessing him with a predator's detached curiosity.
"Leave the ointment," Arthur said, his voice flat. "We have it handled."
Elena paused, the glass jar resting between them like an unspoken negotiation. A thin, humorless smile touched the corners of her lips. She placed the jar down on the bedside table with a soft clink.
"You think you’ve uncovered some grand conspiracy by cutting your trip short, don't you, Arthur?" Elena asked softly, stepping just close enough that he could see the tiny flecks of amber in her irises. "You think you can just swoop in with your corporate savior complex and fix years of carefully laid foundations."
"I think you are abusing our child, Elena," Arthur replied, keeping his voice dangerously low so Lily couldn't parse the full threat behind his words. "And I am putting an end to it today."
Elena laughed, a light, musical sound that sounded entirely out of place in the tense room. "And go where, Arthur? To the police? With what evidence? Every medical record for this household passes through my clinic contacts. Every financial account is tied to my family's trust. You are an employee in your own life, darling. You only have power as long as I allow you to hold it."
She turned gracefully on her heel, her white dress rustling as she walked toward the door. Pausing on the threshold, she cast one final look over her shoulder.
"Pack your bags properly this time. The flight to Dubai leaves again tonight at midnight. I already rescheduled your seat. Don't be late."
The door clicked shut behind her, leaving Arthur and Lily alone once more. The physical threat was implicit, hanging heavily in the quiet air. Elena held all the institutional cards, but she had underestimated one crucial factor: the duffel bag sitting by the door contained untraceable bearer bonds and physical passports under assumed names, accumulated precisely because Arthur had sensed this trap closing years ago.
Lily looked up at him, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Are we leaving?"
May you like
Arthur knelt beside her again, wiping a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb. His jaw was set with grim resolve.
"Yes, Lily," Arthur whispered, his gaze fixed on the locked door. "We are leaving. Pack your favorite things in a small backpack. We have six hours before midnight."
