CHAPTER 2: The Red Notebook

Gabriel pushed the iron door open with his foot. The heavy hinges groaned in protest, kicking up a cloud of long-settled dust. He reached into his robe pocket, clicked on his phone's flashlight, and swept the pale beam across the subterranean room.

It was not a storage unit. It was a furnished living quarter—spartan, sterile, and frozen in time. A single cot stood against the brick wall, draped with a faded woolen blanket. On a small wooden desk sat an empty glass, a half-burnt candle, and a worn leather-bound notebook with a faded red ribbon marker.

"Lily, stay right here by the door," Gabriel instructed softly, setting her down gently. Clara immediately stepped between the girl and the shadows, her protective instincts evident.

Gabriel walked toward the desk, his heart thumping against his ribs like a war drum. He picked up the red notebook. The cover bore faint initials in embossed gold leaf: *E. S.* Eleanor Sterling.

His breath hitched. When Eleanor vanished three years ago, local authorities and private investigators concluded she had fled the country with millions embezzled from the family trust. His father, the imposing patriarch Thomas Sterling, had provided flight records, security footage of her walking out into a taxi, and bank transfers that painted her as a greedy deserter. Gabriel had spent three agonizing years hating her memory while raising their daughter in grief.

With trembling fingers, he flipped to the final entry, dated only two days prior. The handwriting was unmistakable—frantic, slanted, and weak:

> *"Thomas knows Gabriel is asking questions about the logistics audits. He moved me deeper into the foundation. If anyone finds this, I never left. I refused to sign over Lily’s trust. They told Gabriel I ran away. Forgive me, my sweet girl. I am right beneath your feet."*

Gabriel’s vision blurred as rage and horror collided in his chest.
