The weeks that followed brought a media storm that shook the entire state. The arrest of Thomas Sterling and the unearthing of his underground financial empire dominated every headline. News outlets dubbed the case the "Highborn Captivity," peeling back the curtain on decades of corporate extortion, maritime smuggling, and illegal detention.
Gabriel spent every daylight hour cooperating with federal prosecutors. He didn't ask for immunity; he opened every server, ledger, and vault within Sterling Logistics to federal auditors.
"If we rebuild, we rebuild from clean soil," Gabriel told the board of directors during an emergency shareholders' meeting. "Every dollar obtained through my father's extortion will be liquidated into a restitution fund for the victims of his logistics shell companies."
Several old-guard board members protested, claiming the family name would be ruined. Gabriel simply tossed his resignation as CEO onto the mahogany table.
"The Sterling name was already ruined when human lives were treated as balance-sheet liabilities," he said evenly. "I’m taking my wife and daughter away from this city. You can salvage the company, but you will do it legally."
