THE SHADOW BENEATH THE CRADLE / Chapter 15 / 15

CHAPTER 15: The Unbroken Horizon

On Lily’s seventh birthday, the sun broke through the coastal clouds, painting the Pacific Ocean in brilliant shades of gold and sapphire. The backyard of their home was decorated with handmade paper lanterns, and the smell of Eleanor's fresh lemon cake filled the afternoon air.

Clara arrived carrying a giant box wrapped in bright blue paper, laughing as Lily tackled her around the knees in excitement. Down by the water's edge, Gabriel stood watching the three of them, a deep, unshakeable sense of gratitude settling into his bones.

He looked down at his arms. The black ink tattoos of thorns and roses that had once felt like armor against a cruel world now simply felt like marks of history—a reminder of battles fought and survived.

Eleanor walked down the sand dunes to meet him, her dress catching the ocean breeze. She took his hand, leaning against his side as they watched Lily spin Clara around on the grass.

"Daddy! Mommy! Come look at the cake!" Lily called out, waving both arms frantically from the patio table.

"Coming, sweetheart!" Gabriel shouted back.

He turned to Eleanor, smiling warmly. "Ready?"

"Always," Eleanor replied.

They walked up the beach together, hand in hand, leaving deep footprints in the sand that the rising tide would soon wash away—erasing the past, and leaving only the clean, open horizon ahead.
