Chapter 7 - The Visitor on the Porch

The figure on the porch stepped past the threshold without knocking, the floorboards groaning under the weight of an unexpected intruder. The newcomer was a woman in her late twenties, wearing a worn denim jacket and carrying a heavy canvas duffel bag. Her eyes were hard, fixed directly on Martha with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You left the front door unlocked, Martha," the woman said, her voice steady and sharp as broken glass. "Just like you did the night you let Leo walk out with my boys."

Clara clutched the manila folder to her chest, her breathing coming in shallow, frantic gasps as the contractions continued their relentless march. "Who... who are you?"

"My name is Sarah," the woman replied, walking further into the hallway and looking down at Clara with a mix of fierce protection and deep sorrow. "I'm Leo's first wife—the one he told you died in a car crash."

Martha didn't flinch. She simply crossed her arms over her green cardigan and tilted her head. "You took your time getting here, Sarah. I thought the state police had you tied up in traffic on the interstate."

"I was," Sarah said, dropping the heavy canvas bag to the floor with a dull thud that rattled the baseboards. "Until your precious son used my social security number to purchase a burner phone at a truck stop ten miles down the road. He’s not fleeing the state, Martha. He’s circling back."

Officer Vance drew his hand back to his holster, his posture stiffening. "Circling back? Why would he come back here with an active warrant and federal agents sweeping the county?"

"Because he left something in the basement," Sarah answered coldly, pulling a small silver flash drive from her pocket and holding it up for everyone to see. "The offshore account keys. He can't access the millions he stole from the firm without the physical hardware token he hid inside the old coal chute beneath this very floor."

Clara let out a muffled scream as another intense contraction tore through her lower body, arching her back against the floor. "I don't care about his money! I need a doctor! The babies are coming right now!"

Sarah dropped to her knees beside Clara, ignoring the hostility in the room as she ripped open her canvas duffel bag and pulled out a bundle of sterile hospital blankets. "Forget the money, Clara. We have to deliver these babies ourselves, because Leo jammed the smart locks from his phone, and the house is currently rigged with a timed gas-release system."

Martha's eyes widened slightly for the first time. "A gas system? The smart home hub doesn't have that capability."

May you like

"He installed it last week under the guise of a 'carbon monoxide safety upgrade,'" Sarah snapped, unzipping her jacket to reveal a heavy set of wire cutters tucked into her belt. "And the timer started ticking the moment the front door was opened."
