Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Panic

The morning air cut through the open front door, bringing the scent of damp asphalt and looming panic. Clara lay sprawled on the hardwood hallway floor, her fingers clawing desperately at the grain as a sharp contraction ripped through her frame. Her blonde hair tangled around her pale face, wet with cold sweat.

Standing over her, Martha clutched her glowing smartphone in a trembling hand, her face carved with a strange blend of urgency and chilling detachment. She tapped the screen furiously, her eyes darting between the digital display and Clara’s writhing form.

"Was she abandoned? Yes, she was," Martha muttered to the empty air before shouting down the hallway. "Your first baby is coming right now, and you are entirely on your own!"

Clara gasped for air, the pain blinding her to everything except the terror in her chest. "Leo... where is Leo? The car... he went to the car!"

Martha knelt slowly, her green cardigan brushing against Clara’s white t-shirt. She did not offer a hand to pull Clara up. Instead, she leaned in close, her voice dropping to a harsh, accusing whisper that defied the warmth she should have shown a mother in labor.

"Leo isn't coming back for you, Clara. Look at the driveway. The black car is already gone."

Clara shook her head violently, tears blurring her vision. "That's a lie. He just stepped out to check the tire. He told me not to move until he got back!"

"He told you that so you wouldn't run," Martha retorted sharply, her thumb scrolling through a cascade of text messages on her phone. "Do you honestly think a man who spent the last three years hiding your existence from his real family is going to stick around for a double delivery? He packed the trunk last night while you were asleep."

"You're making this up!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as another wave of agony crested through her abdomen. "Give me the phone! Let me call him!"

"There is no signal for you," Martha said coldly, flashing the screen. "And even if there was, the number has been disconnected. But that isn't even the worst part. Check the smart security camera notification I just received."

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as Martha turned the phone toward her face, revealing a live video feed of the driveway, completely empty except for a small, forgotten envelope resting on the pavement.
