Chapter 14 - The Cut Brakes

Officer Vance froze, his hand instinctively reaching for the radio clipped to his belt. He clicked the transmit button twice, but only static hissed back in response. The frequency had been jammed.
"My cruiser," Vance whispered, breaking into a dead sprint toward the mouth of the alley where his unmarked police car had been parked near the curb.
Sarah and Martha followed close behind, helping Clara carry the twins as they hurried out of the drainage ditch and onto the paved street. The morning sun was climbing higher in the sky, casting long, sharp shadows across the suburban neighborhood that had suddenly transformed into a ghost town.
They reached the end of the alley just in time to see Officer Vance standing beside his cruiser, staring down at the front driver's-side wheel in stunned silence. A thick puddle of dark brake fluid was rapidly pooling across the asphalt, soaking into the dry dust of the gutter.
"The lines were sheared with bolt cutters," Vance said, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "Not five minutes ago. Someone was standing right here while we were in the ditch."
Martha pointed a slender, trembling finger toward the end of the block. A sleek black motorcycle idling at the corner intersection roared to life, its matte-black frame blending seamlessly with the shadows of the overhanging maples. A rider wearing a full-face helmet straddled the machine, turning their head slowly to look directly at Clara before twisting the throttle.
"There he is," Martha hissed.
The motorcycle surged forward, accelerating down the empty street with a deafening roar of exhaust, disappearing around the corner before Vance could even draw his service weapon.
Clara clutched her twins closer, her heart hammering against her ribs as she looked down at the tiny, peaceful faces sleeping soundly against her chest, completely unaware of the chaos swirling around them.
"He's still out there," Clara whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with an absolute, unyielding determination. "He thinks he won because he destroyed the house and cut the brakes."
Sarah placed a comforting hand on Clara’s shoulder, looking toward the horizon where the smoke from the ruins was finally beginning to dissipate. "He didn't win, Clara. Because he left the one thing he never expected us to find."
Vance turned sharply, looking at Sarah. "What are you talking about?"
Sarah reached into her denim jacket and pulled out the small silver flash drive she had recovered from the basement coal chute. "The encryption keys to his offshore accounts aren't just for his money. They're tied to the federal database tracking every single alias he's used for the past ten years."

Before anyone could respond, the screen of the cell phone Clara was still holding lit up once more, displaying a single, incoming text message from an unknown number.
