Chapter 3 - The Cradle Swap

The silence that followed Chloe’s confession was absolute. Even the gentle hum of the estate’s climate control seemed to die away, leaving only the sound of ragged breathing.

Julian staggered backward as if struck physically in the chest. His hand, still clutching the silver locket, dropped to his side. The marble floor beneath his polished shoes felt suddenly unstable, as though the foundation of his entire existence was crumbling into dust.

"Switch..." Julian choked out, the word tasting like bile in his throat. "What are you talking about? Switch whose babies?"

Elena lunged forward, her nails clawing at Chloe’s shoulder. "She is insane! Guards! Someone drag this lunatic to the basement!"

Julian caught Elena by the shoulder, shoving her aside with a force that sent her stumbling against the mahogany console table, shattering a crystal vase. The glass shards scattered across the floor like frozen tears.

"You will not touch her," Julian roared, his restraint finally snapping. He turned back to Chloe, his face pale, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization. "Chloe. Explain. Right now."

Chloe pressed her back harder against the marble pillar, tears streaming freely down her flushed cheeks. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Elena, who was now clutching her bruised shoulder and glaring with murderous intent.

"Your firstborn child with Clara... she didn't die in the nursery fire," Chloe wept, her voice breaking on every syllable. "Clara survived the initial blaze. She made it to the private maternity wing where Elena had just given birth to her own child—your child with Elena, born out of your secret affair before Clara’s return."

Julian pressed his hands to his temples, his head spinning. "An affair... Clara never knew about Elena."

"She found out," Chloe said, her eyes locked on Julian with devastating clarity. "She walked in on you both just hours before the fire. She was broken. When she went into labor prematurely that night, she realized Elena’s child and her child were born in the same hospital corridor just rooms apart."

Julian dropped his hands, staring at the young maid as the horrific machinery of the past clicked into place. "She switched them."

"No," Chloe whispered, shaking her head. "Elena’s guards set the fire to silence Clara. But before the smoke filled the ward, Clara swapped the cribs. She gave her own child to the nurses to be raised in luxury, protected by the Blackwood name, while she took Elena’s biological child into the slums to ensure she would never be touched by your wealth."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He looked at Chloe, really looked at her—the shape of her jaw, the haunting amber tint of her eyes.

"And you..." Julian whispered, the horrifying math forming in his mind. "If Clara took Elena’s child into the slums... and you were raised alongside her..."

"I am not the maid's niece," Chloe sobbed, sliding down the pillar until she sat in a heap on the cold floor. "I am Elena’s biological daughter. And the young woman you sent away to boarding school yesterday—the one you call your beloved heiress, Victoria—is Clara’s true child."
