Chapter 2 - The Ghost from the Ashes

The silver locket swayed slightly in Chloe’s trembling palm, catching the cold gleam of the crystal chandeliers. Julian Blackwood reached out, his long fingers hovering just inches from the metal as if touching it would ignite a fuse that could destroy his entire empire.
"Where did you get that?" Julian whispered, his voice stripped of its usual authority.
Elena stepped in, her designer heels clicking sharply against the marble. Her face was flushed with cold fury, her aristocratic features twisting into a mask of pure panic.
"Julian, do not fall for this pathetic theater!" Elena snapped, grabbing his arm. "She is a servant girl plucked from the slums of East District. She steals trinkets from antique shops and weaves melodramatic fairy tales to trap wealthy men. Security will have her off the premises in five minutes."
"Shut up, Elena," Julian said without raising his voice, yet the sheer venom in his tone made his wife recoil. He finally looked at Elena, his eyes cold and devoid of any affection. "You knew about the fire, didn't you? You knew Clara never escaped."
Elena’s composure fractured for a fraction of a second, her pupils dilating before she forced her chin back up. "Clara was a mistake from your past. Everyone knows she perished in the tenement fire. This girl is an opportunist."
Julian ignored her and knelt slowly on the marble floor, bringing himself eye-level with Chloe. The young maid was still clutching her stomach, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow bursts.
"Look at me, Chloe," Julian said gently, his hand finally closing around the silver locket. He turned it over. There, worn smooth by decades of handling, were the intertwining initials of his late mother: M.B. "Clara gave this to you? But Clara died before you could have possibly... wait. How old are you?"
"I am twenty-two, sir," Chloe choked out, wiping a tear with the back of her soiled apron. "And I am not Clara’s daughter. I am her younger sister’s child. But that is not the secret your wife paid me to keep."
Elena gasped, taking a sudden step back. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking stark against the maroon silk of her gown.
"You lying parasite," Elena hissed under her breath, her hands trembling.
Julian rose to his full height, towering over his wife with an expression of terrifying realization. "What did she pay you to keep, Chloe? Speak now, or so help me God, I will tear this estate down to the foundations."
Chloe swallowed hard, looking between the powerful man who had just discovered his legacy and the ruthless woman who had engineered his isolation.

"Your wife didn't just pay me to hide my identity," Chloe said, her voice dropping to a haunting whisper that echoed down the long hall. "She paid me to switch the babies in the hospital ward twenty-two years ago."
