Chapter 12 - The Hostile Takeover

The damp air of the basement seemed to freeze in Julian’s lungs. He stood immovable, the full weight of Alexander’s corporate trap settling over him like lead. Twenty-two years of building, expanding, and defending the Blackwood shipping empire, and it had all been systematically dismantled in a single night by a web of lies and legal clauses.
"You orchestrated this," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "You planted the rumors. You leaked the adoption records to Victoria."
Alexander smiled, sliding the manila folder back beneath his overcoat with infuriating calm. "I didn't have to plant anything, Julian. You and Elena did all the heavy lifting. All I did was leave a little trail of breadcrumbs for your brilliant, ambitious foster daughter to follow. Blood always runs toward the fire, doesn't it?"
Victoria groaned again, pushing herself up onto her elbows. Her blonde hair was matted with soot, and a small cut bled sluggishly above her left eyebrow. She looked up, her amber eyes locking onto Alexander with a mixture of confusion and lingering fury.
"Who... who are you?" Victoria choked out, wincing as she clutched her bruised ribs.
"Your uncle, technically speaking," Alexander said smoothly, offering her a mock salute. "Or at least, the man who is about to repossess your trust fund, your penthouse, and your last name."
Julian dropped to one knee beside Victoria, ignoring Alexander entirely. He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. "Can you stand?" he asked softly.
Victoria nodded slowly, her jaw tightening as she pushed herself up to her feet, leaning heavily against Julian for support. She glared across the room at Alexander. "You used me," she whispered, the realization cutting deeper than any physical injury. "Every document I found... every lead in the archive... you gave it to me."
"I merely provided the map, my dear," Alexander replied, checking a gold-plated wristwatch. "And speaking of maps, I suggest you both clear out of my new property. The demolition crews arrive at dawn to flatten the rest of Block 42. Whatever ghosts are left down here are about to be buried permanently."
Alexander turned on his heel, his tailored overcoat swirling around his ankles as he began the long walk back toward the stairwell.
"Alexander," Julian called out, his voice stopping the man in his tracks.
Alexander glanced back over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised in mild amusement. "Yes, Julian? Have you finally accepted your early retirement?"
"You think you've won," Julian said, his eyes burning with a sudden, fierce resolve that caught his half-brother off guard. "You think a stack of corporate papers and a rigged trust fund makes you master of Blackwood Estate."
"It legally does," Alexander replied dryly.
"Paperwork can be shredded," Julian said, taking a step forward with Victoria still leaning on his arm. "And empires built on ash always collapse. But there is one thing you forgot to account for."
Alexander frowned slightly, his smug facade slipping for a fraction of a second. "And what is that?"
Julian looked down at Victoria, then back toward the dark exit where the distant sound of sirens began to wail through the rainy night air.

"Chloe," Julian said clearly. "She knows where the original birth certificates are hidden. And unlike the diary, she didn't leave them in the basement."
