Chapter 9 - The Siege Of Blackwood Manor

The heavy oak door of the drawing room shuddered violently under a sudden, coordinated impact from the outside, the brass handle rattling as the wood splintered around the frame. Julian shoved Marcus away with a powerful heave, sending the butler crashing backward into a display cabinet filled with antique porcelain. The delicate glass shattered into a thousand glittering fragments across the floorboards.
Evelyn shrieked in absolute terror, clutching her dark blue lace dress as she scrambled behind the heavy velvet armchair.
“They’re here,” Evelyn whispered, her face pale as death. “The board members… they found out about the audit.”
Lily let out a sharp cry, burying her face in the fold of Julian’s dark blue suit. Julian wrapped his massive, tattooed arm securely around his daughter, his eyes locked on the battered entranceway as he braced for a breach.
Before another blow could strike the door, the heavy lock mechanism gave way with a loud metallic snap, and the oak panels swung wide open.
Standing in the threshold was not a team of federal agents, but Detective Miller of the state police, flanked by two uniformed officers with their service weapons drawn and ready. Miller’s sharp, weathered face took in the chaotic scene instantly—the broken glass, the blood-stained Persian rug, Marcus picking himself up from the wreckage of the cabinet, Evelyn trembling in the corner, and Clara standing barefoot in her ruined black dress beside the open wall panel.
Miller lowered his weapon slightly, his eyes narrowing as he stared directly at Julian.
“Mr. Blackwood,” Miller said, his voice hard and uncompromising. “Drop whatever you’re holding. We received an anonymous digital transmission containing three years’ worth of financial records tied to missing persons and forged death certificates originating from this IP address.”
Julian stood his ground, his heavy frame shielding Clara and Lily from the direct line of sight of the officers.
“Detective, you’re just in time,” Julian said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. “My mother and her associate Marcus just spent the last three years holding my wife hostage inside the structural walls of this house.”
Miller’s gaze flicked over to Evelyn, who was shaking her head frantically from behind the armchair.
“That’s a lie! He’s covering for her!” Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with desperate rage. “Clara staged her own disappearance to frame us! She’s a criminal!”
Marcus brushed a shard of glass from his immaculate black sleeve, stepping forward with an air of cold, manufactured professionalism.
“Officer, I am the estate manager,” Marcus stated smoothly, ignoring the blood still smeared on his collar. “Mr. Blackwood is suffering from severe emotional instability. The woman standing by the fireplace is an impostor who broke into the private archives tonight.”
Clara stepped forward into the harsh light, holding up the metallic data drive in her pale fingers for the officers to see.
“The archives don’t lie, Detective,” Clara said, her raspy voice cutting through the noise like a razor. “And neither do the security logs on this drive, which detail every single transaction Marcus made to cover up the murder attempts.”
Detective Miller stared at Clara for a long, heavy moment, recognizing the haunted, unmistakable look of a survivor. He nodded slowly to the officers at his flanks.
“Secure Mr. Marcus and Mrs. Blackwood,” Miller ordered sharply.
As the uniformed officers moved in to snap handcuffs onto Evelyn and the butler, Marcus cast one final, venomous glare toward Julian and whispered a warning that made the blood run cold in Julian’s veins.

“You think arresting us stops the cycle, Mr. Blackwood?” Marcus whispered as the steel cuffs clicked shut. “Check the foundation blueprints. Arthur’s final contingency isn’t a will… it’s a timer.”
