Chapter 11 - The Iron Lever In The Dark

Julian’s fingers searched frantically along the damp, freezing brick lining of the interior shaft, the rough mortar scraping against his skin and drawing thin lines of blood across his tattooed knuckles. The distant, shrill shriek of emergency alarms began to vibrate through the floorboards beneath his boots, accompanied by the muffled, frantic shouts of police officers trapped below the grand staircase.

“Julian, careful,” Clara warned, kneeling down beside him and holding the edge of her stained black dress clear of the dust. “Arthur installed counter-weights on those manual releases. If you pull the wrong toggle, the entire brick facade will collapse inward.”

Julian gritted his teeth, his massive biceps straining as he threw his weight into the dark recess. His fingers finally hooked around a heavy, grease-coated iron lever buried deep behind a stack of rusted ventilation pipes.

“I’ve got it,” Julian grunted, the veins in his thick neck bulging against his dark ink as he hauled back with every ounce of his considerable strength.

With a deafening, metallic groan that sounded like tearing steel, the entire marble mantelpiece shuddered. The heavy brick-lined shaft shifted forward two inches, releasing a dense plume of grey dust and stale, freezing air that smelled of old iron and long-forgotten earth.

Detective Miller rushed forward, using his heavy flashlight to pierce the gloom inside the newly widened cavity.

“There’s a secondary stairwell,” Miller announced, pointing his beam down a steep, spiral iron staircase plunging straight into the pitch-black abyss beneath the manor. “It leads directly to the sub-basement control room where the security shutters are wired.”

Julian pulled himself up from the floor, shaking the dust from his heavy dark blue suit. He didn’t hesitate for a single second.

“Stay here, Clara,” Julian commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument as he reached toward the staircase.

Clara grabbed his forearm with her pale, scarred hand, her dark eyes flashing with fierce determination.

“Not a chance, Julian,” Clara said firmly, her raspy voice carrying an unyielding resolve. “You don’t know the labyrinth Arthur built down there. One wrong turn in those maintenance tunnels and you’ll walk right into the nitrogen purge zone.”

Julian looked down into her pale, exhausted face, seeing the exact same stubborn courage that had kept her alive behind those brick walls for three agonizing years. He gave a sharp, decisive nod.

“Stay behind me,” Julian instructed, stepping past the threshold into the dark spiral stairwell.

As they descended into the cold bowels of Blackwood Manor, the air grew noticeably thinner, the harsh chemical scent of pressurized nitrogen stinging the backs of their throats with every breath. The emergency klaxons overhead flashed in rhythmic, blood-red pulses against the damp brick walls.

At the bottom of the spiral staircase stood a heavy, reinforced steel door marked with the original Blackwood family crest—and a digital keypad that was flashing a countdown timer in glowing red numbers: 04:12.

Julian stepped up to the keypad, raising his heavily tattooed hand, but before his fingers could touch the buttons, a cold, metallic voice echoed from a hidden speaker mounted above the door frame.

“I wouldn’t press that, Mr. Blackwood,” Marcus’s voice hissed smoothly from the intercom, carrying an unsettling note of triumph. “The override code was deleted the moment the police breached the front foyer. You’ve walked straight into Arthur’s final trap.”
