Chapter 2 - The Portrait Of Lies

The silence in the drawing room became absolute, heavier than the cold marble fireplace or the oppressive weight of the ancestral portraits lining the dark wood-paneled walls. Clara sat rigidly inside the narrow brick-lined shaft, her black dress stained with age and dust, the harsh light of the single overhead bulb carving deep, exhausted hollows into her gaunt cheeks. She did not scream, nor did she weep; she merely stared out at the three figures frozen in shock, her chest rising and falling in that same slow, agonizing rhythm Lily had heard through the masonry.
Julian dropped his hand from the heavy frame, his massive tattooed chest heaving as if he had just been struck by a physical blow. His dark blue suit suddenly felt too tight, restricting his breath as his mind violently rejected the impossible geometry of what his eyes were processing. Clara had been buried three years ago beneath a polished granite stone in the family plot two miles away.
“Clara,” Julian choked out, the name tearing from his throat like dry sandpaper. He took a staggering half-step toward the dark opening, his heavy boots scraping against the floorboards. “How… how is this possible?”
Evelyn lunged forward with sudden, terrifying strength, grabbing the heavy gilded frame of the portrait and shoving it violently back toward the wall. The metal access door slammed shut with a dull, metallic echo, cutting off the sight of the woman in the black dress before Julian could reach inside.
“Don’t you dare!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice trembling with a feral desperation that made Lily back away into the shadows of the mantle. “You seal that back up right now, Julian! You hear me? You let her stay buried!”
Julian spun around, his tattooed hands curling into massive fists at his sides. The ink on his knuckles stretched tight over white-knuckled skin as a dark, dangerous fury overtook his shock.
“She was alive behind that wall, Mother!” Julian roared, stepping menacingly toward the older woman. “For three years! You told me she died in that car crash! You planned the funeral! You stood beside me at the grave!”
“I did what was necessary to protect this family!” Evelyn screamed back, tears of absolute rage springing to her wrinkled eyes as she jabbed a trembling finger at the hidden panel. “You have no idea what she brought into this house! You have no idea what she was doing behind our backs!”
Lily pressed her back against the cold stone of the fireplace, watching her grandmother and her father tear into each other with a hatred she had never suspected existed beneath their polite domestic facade.
“Daddy,” Lily whispered, her voice shaking as she pointed a trembling finger down at the floor near the rug.
Julian ignored her, his eyes locked on his mother in a lethal staring contest.
“Open that door right now, Mother, or I swear to God I will tear this entire mansion down brick by brick with my bare hands,” Julian threatened, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper.
Evelyn let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded like breaking glass.
“Go ahead and open it, Julian,” Evelyn whispered, stepping aside and pointing a shaking finger at the metal panel. “Look closer at her dress. Look at what she was holding in her lap before you pulled me away. She wasn’t trapped in there, Julian. She was waiting for you to finish what you started.”

Julian froze, his hand hovering over the latch of the hidden door as a fresh wave of dread washed over him.
