Chapter 9

The red emergency strobes painted the exposed brick walls of the TriBeCa loft in frantic, rhythmic flashes. Elena Vance didn't panic; her hands moved with cold precision across her keyboard, hitting a sequence of master wipe commands that began purging the local hard drives with a series of digital self-destruct routines.

“They bypassed the building's security protocols,” Elena said, her voice unnaturally steady as the progress bars on her screens turned from blue to flashing amber. “We have less than ninety seconds before the tactical team breaches the ground-floor stairwell.”

Reyes drew his Glock, checking the magazine slide with practiced familiarity before chambering a round. He stepped toward the heavy steel freight elevator, but the control panel was dead—the power to the shaft had been remotely severed from the main municipal grid.

“Elevator’s out,” Reyes said sharply, his eyes darting to the windows overlooking the rain-slicked alley. “Fire escape?”

“Too exposed. They’ll have snipers positioned on the opposite rooftops within sixty seconds of the grid drop,” Elena replied, pulling a heavy aluminum Pelican case off the server rack and snapping its latches shut. She hoisted the case with surprising strength. “There’s a maintenance service tunnel connecting this basement to the old Croton Aqueduct system beneath Broadway. It’s an old municipal utility bypass.”

“Lead the way,” Reyes barked, positioning himself near the door with his weapon raised.

As if on cue, the heavy wooden entrance door at the far end of the loft exploded inward in a splintering roar of wood and heavy-caliber breaching charges. Flashbang grenades tumbled across the polished concrete floor, detonating with blinding white fury and deafening concussive blasts that rattled the fillings in Reyes’s teeth.

Reyes dropped to one knee, shielding his eyes as thick white smoke billowed into the room. Through the haze, three figures in unmarked matte-black tactical gear surged through the smoking threshold, their weapons raised with disciplined, military precision.

“Contact left!” Reyes shouted, squeezing off two controlled shots into the floorboards just in front of the lead operator to force them into cover behind a concrete pillar.

“Move! Now!” Elena yelled, grabbing his shoulder and yanking him toward the rear service corridor.

Reyes fired two more suppressing rounds before pivoting and sprinting after her down the narrow, unlit hallway. Behind them, the tactical team opened fire, heavy rifle rounds chewing through the drywall and shattering the glass partitions of the loft offices in a storm of jagged debris.

They reached the heavy steel fire door at the end of the hall. Elena slammed her palm against the pneumatic release bar, shoving the door open into the black, dripping concrete stairwell that descended deep into the bowels of the city.

As they slammed the heavy door shut behind them and threw the manual deadbolt, the muffled sound of muffled gunfire echoed against the concrete walls, chasing them down into the dark.
