Chapter 14

The cold steel barrels of four assault rifles locked onto Officer Mateo Reyes with absolute, unyielding precision. Reyes kept his hands level, his fingers hovering inches from his holster, knowing that a single twitch would mean death. Director Thomas Vance stepped forward, his expression a mask of cold, bureaucratic pity as he looked down at Elena.

“Drop the case, Elena,” Thomas commanded quietly, holding out his hand for the titanium token. “The upload window closes in three minutes. If you don't authenticate the handoff, the system will automatically default to emergency lockdown protocol across every federal node in the country. You can't stop it now.”

Elena didn't drop the case. Instead, she slowly set it down on the steel maintenance console, popped the latches, and pulled out the ruggedized laptop. The screen flashed a bright red countdown timer: 11:58:12 PM.

“You think this is about authentication, Thomas?” Elena asked, her voice steady, carrying a chilling clarity that made her cousin hesitate. “I spent the last three months tracking every line of code you wrote. I didn't build a decryption key. I built a suicide pill.”

Thomas’s eyes narrowed, a flash of genuine panic crossing his face for the first time. “What did you do?”

“I linked the master server directly to the municipal emergency broadcast network,” Elena said, her fingers dancing across the keyboard to enter a final, six-digit override sequence. “The moment you try to authenticate your token, the logic bomb executes across every federal grid simultaneously. It doesn't just delete the Janus code—it exposes every black-budget project, every illegal surveillance node, and every unauthorized directive you signed off on to every major news outlet in the world.”

“Shoot her!” Thomas roared, losing his composure as he lunged forward to grab the laptop.

Reyes didn't hesitate. He drew his Glock in a blinding blur of motion, swinging the barrel away from the tactical team and firing a single round into the overhead emergency sprinkler pipe directly above Thomas’s head.

The heavy pipe ruptured instantly with a deafening hiss, unleashing a high-pressure torrent of freezing water that drenched Thomas and the surrounding server racks in a blinding cascade. The tactical officers momentarily blinded by the sudden deluge, hesitated, their training compromised by the unexpected environmental hazard.

“Execute!” Elena screamed, slamming her palm down onto the enter key.

The laptop screen flashed a brilliant, blinding white, replacing the countdown timer with a single bold word: PURGED.

Across the room, the banks of server lights flickered violently from green to amber, then sputtered out one by one into total, absolute darkness. The humming roar of the quantum cooling fans died away, leaving only the sound of rushing water and heavy breathing in the damp subterranean air.
