Chapter 9: The Black Ledger

By dawn, the back office of the garage smelled of freshly brewed coffee and antiseptic. Elena sat beside Julian, gently cleaning the cut on his cheek with a gauze pad. On the wooden desk between them lay the grandfather's letter and an old black leather-bound ledger containing vessel coordinates, fuel shipment manifests, and wire transfer logs from a decade ago.
"My grandfather kept records of every single gallon of industrial accelerant ordered by Thorne Logistics before the fire," Julian explained, turning the yellowed pages. "He tried to take it to the district attorney back in 2016, but Arthur Vance had him fired and threatened to take our family home if he spoke out."
Elena read through the figures, her heart aching at the depth of the corruption. "My father didn't just look the other way. He helped Richard Thorne launder the insurance settlement through our overseas holding companies. It’s all here. Every bank account, every signature."
She looked up at Julian, tears shimmering in her hazel eyes. "If this goes public, Julian, Vance Global will lose half its value. My family's name will be ruined forever."

Julian covered her trembling hand with his scarred palm. His touch was warm, solid, and comforting. "Truth isn't about destroying your family, Elena. It’s about cutting out the rot so something honest can grow in its place. What do you want to do?"
Elena closed the black ledger and stood up tall, the crimson gown now wrinkled but glowing like armor under the morning sun. "We give it to the world."
