Chapter 15 - The Quiet Shore

Fourteen months later, the autumn air was crisp and smelled of woodsmoke and damp earth. Mark walked slowly down the familiar gravel path toward the edge of the county reservoir, his steps light and unburdened. He wore a simple blue button-down shirt and dark jeans, the canvas fishing bag slung over his shoulder, and the bundled fishing rods rattling softly in his right hand.
A few steps ahead of him, wearing a light pink dress and clean white sneakers, walked a healthy, laughing toddler with bright blonde hair. Lily stopped near the water's edge, squatting down to examine a smooth flat stone skipping across the gentle ripples of the water.
"Daddy, look!" Lily called out, turning around with a bright, genuine smile, her blue eyes shining with the simple, unscripted joy of an ordinary afternoon. "A big fish jumped over there!"
Mark smiled, walking up to stand beside her at the water's edge. He knelt down to her eye level, holding out the blue fishing rod for her to touch, exactly as he had always dreamed of doing in the quiet reality of the waking world.

"I see it, baby," Mark said softly, his voice warm and steady, completely free of fear, secrets, or shadows. "Let's set up the lines."
He cast the line out into the open water, watching the bobber settle peacefully onto the calm surface of the reservoir. There were no loops to repeat, no screens to watch, and no hidden doors waiting in the kitchen. There was only the present moment, the quiet rhythm of the water, and a father and daughter standing together in the bright, unfiltered light of a brand-new day.
