Chapter 13 - The Closing Circle

The patrol car sat parked on the gravel shoulder, its engine idling with a low, steady purr. Officer Miller stood by the open passenger door, his expression grave but respectful as he watched Mark and Clara approach. There were no sirens screaming, no sudden movements, and no frantic panic—only the quiet, heavy gravity of a reckoning long overdue.

Mark stopped a few feet from the cruiser. He gently shifted Lily in his arms, passing her over to Clara, who cradled the toddler tightly, burying her face in the child’s blonde curls. Lily blinked open her big blue eyes, looking up at her mother with sleepy recognition, completely unaware of the world-altering journey they had just survived.

"Mark," Officer Miller said quietly, stepping forward and resting his hand on his duty belt, though he made no move to draw handcuffs. "We got an anonymous tip this morning about the ledger in the reservoir tunnel. Was that you?"

"It was me," Mark said, his voice steady, clear, and devoid of the defensive tremors that had plagued him for years. "The car, the brakes, the ledger—it’s all down there in the vault. I’m ready to sign the confession."

Officer Miller nodded slowly, pulling a small notebook and a pen from his breast pocket. "You understand what this means, Mark? There’s no going back once this report is filed."

"I don't want to go back," Mark replied, looking past the officer toward the shimmering expanse of the reservoir water. The surface was perfectly still now, reflecting the bright blue sky without a single ripple of distortion or hidden shadow. "I spent three years trying to rewrite a morning that never happened. It's time to live in the real world, whatever is left of it."

Officer Miller clicked his pen, the sharp mechanical sound ringing out clearly in the crisp air, and began to write down Mark’s formal statement as the morning breeze rustled the pine needles overhead, carrying away the last lingering traces of the cold, subterranean mist.
