Chapter 12 - The Burden of Grace

Clara knelt slowly in the damp grass beside him, her gaze shifting to the sleeping toddler in Mark’s arms. A faint, bittersweet smile touched the corners of her mouth as she reached out and gently brushed a stray curl away from Lily’s forehead.

"She’s been keeping you anchored here for three years, Mark," Clara said softly, her voice steady despite the tears tracking down her cheeks. "Trapped in that loop because you couldn't forgive yourself for what happened to Thomas. But you can't live in the memory anymore. The police are waiting at the ranger station down the road."

Mark looked at her, his heart skipping a beat. The terror he expected to feel didn't come; instead, a strange, profound lightness settled into his chest. The walls of denial were gone, and with them, the suffocating guilt that had built a prison out of a normal morning.

"Are you going to let them take me?" Mark asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"I already called them, Mark," Clara said, her hand resting firmly on his forearm, warm and real against his skin. "Not to punish you, but to end it. For Thomas, for us, and for Lily. She deserves to grow up knowing her father faced the truth instead of hiding behind a ghost."

Mark looked down at Lily. The toddler stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh in her sleep, her little fingers loosening their grip on his shirt. She wasn't broadcasting digital warnings anymore; she was just a tired little girl resting after a long, impossible journey.

"I'm ready," Mark said, standing up slowly with Lily in his arms, the canvas fishing bag still resting on the grass beside the tackle box.
