By 2:00 PM, Maya had been transferred to a private recovery suite in the secure maternity wing.
Clara was sleeping peacefully in the clear acrylic bassinet beside her bed, breathing with the gentle, rhythmic flutter of a healthy newborn.
The door to the suite opened quietly. Arthur Pendelton walked in, carrying a leather briefcase and a bouquet of fresh white freesia. Arthur was a sixty-year-old veteran family law attorney with sharp, honest eyes and a gentle demeanor.
"Congratulations, Maya," Arthur smiled, setting the flowers on the windowsill. "She is the spitting image of your mother."
"How are things on the outside, Arthur?" Maya asked, sitting up against her pillows.
Arthur took a seat in the armchair beside the bed, opening his briefcase. "The state attorney general has officially unsealed the indictment against Richard and Victoria Sterling. The digital package you transmitted from your phone this morning included the complete ledger of Julian’s life insurance trust—the one hundred and twenty million dollars Richard attempted to divert into their offshore shell entities."
"And the guardianship motion?"
"Dismissed with prejudice by the presiding district judge thirty minutes ago," Arthur stated, handing Maya a certified copy of the decree. "Victoria and Richard have been served with a permanent restraining order. Furthermore, Richard was formally detained at his corporate office on federal wire fraud and embezzlement charges."
Maya looked at the legal document. For nine months, the Sterling name had hung over her like a guillotine. Now, in the quiet sunlight of a hospital room, the blade had been dismantled by the power of unvarnished truth.
