The Flight to Mercy

The ambulance bay doors slammed shut, sealing out the grand facade of the Sterling estate.
Maya lay on the gurney, breathing in the cool, steady flow of pure oxygen. Beside her, the telemetry monitor displayed the baby's fetal heart tones:
Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump...
"Heart rate is one hundred and forty, strong and reactive," the paramedic noted, adjusting the IV line of lactated Ringer’s in Maya’s forearm. "You did incredible, Maya. Holding your ground like that while in active labor takes superhuman nerves."
Maya closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath.
For nine months, she had lived inside the Sterling house like a prized bird in a gilded cage. After her husband, Julian Sterling, died in a tragic vehicular accident during her first trimester, Victoria and Richard had systematically isolated her. They took control of Julian’s estate, canceled Maya’s independent health insurance under the guise of "family consolidation," and attempted to force her into signing a pre-birth legal guardianship waiver that would give the grandparents sole legal custody upon birth.
Maya was not a timid victim; she was a former investigative forensic accountant who had spent five years auditing corrupt non-profit trusts. She had complied on the surface, allowing Victoria to believe her isolation was complete, while quietly documenting every threatening remark, every forged bank document, and every attempt to restrict her medical access on a secure, remote cloud server.
The ambulance siren wound down as the vehicle pulled into the emergency trauma bay of Mercy General Hospital.
The doors swung open. Waiting at the threshold was Dr. Sarah Linwood, chief of maternal-fetal medicine, accompanied by two pediatric surgical nurses.

"Maya Linwood," Dr. Linwood greeted her, immediately placing a warm hand on Maya’s shoulder as the gurney was wheeled into Trauma Room 2. "We have OR 4 prepped for a primary Cesarean delivery. Your attorney, Arthur Pendelton, just arrived with the sealed protective orders. No member of the Sterling family will be permitted on this floor."
"Thank you, Doctor," Maya whispered, feeling the warm tears finally break through her composure. "Let's bring my daughter into the world."
