The Clean Cry

The operating room was a sanctuary of stainless steel, sterile blue drapes, and bright, shadowless halogen lights.
"Spinal anesthesia is in. Numbness starting at the level of T4," the anesthesiologist announced smoothly.
Maya lay on the operating table, her gaze fixed on the sterile drape separating her chest from the surgical field. Dr. Linwood worked with swift, elegant precision. The rhythmic hum of the suction machine and the steady beep... beep... beep... of the cardiac monitor filled the room.
"Uterine incision made. Delivering the feet... gentle traction on the shoulders... clearing the airway," Dr. Linwood narrated in a calm, confident voice.
At 9:42 AM, a sound broke through the clinical quiet—a clear, loud, furious wail of new life that bounced off the tiled walls like a song of pure triumph.
"It’s a girl," Dr. Linwood smiled behind her surgical mask, lifting the infant above the drape for Maya to see. "Eight pounds, one ounce. Full APGAR score of nine."
The pediatric nurse quickly cleaned the baby, swaddled her in a warm cotton blanket with pink stripes, and placed her onto Maya’s bare chest.

The baby’s skin was warm, soft, and fragrant with new life. Her small, dark eyes fluttered open, blinking against the room's soft light, her tiny fingers curling around Maya’s index finger with surprising, unbreakable strength.
"Hi, Clara," Maya wept softly, pressing her lips to her daughter's forehead. "You’re here. You’re free. Nobody will ever cage you."
