Chapter 9 - The Wreckage on the Rocks

The impact sent a shockwave across the dark surface of the bay. The sleek carbon-fiber hull of the Vance Pride crumpled against the jagged granite boulders of the northern cove like a discarded toy, its bow jutting awkwardly into the air at a forty-five-degree angle. Thick, oily black smoke billowed upward into the night sky, illuminated by the orange glow of a localized fuel fire spreading rapidly along the starboard deck.

Marcus instantly cut their throttles, letting the interceptor drift to a controlled halt fifty yards from the wreckage. He grabbed a heavy throw-rope and his tactical life-vest from the bulkhead rack.

"Stay here in the cabin, Maya! The hull could go up entirely if the auxiliary tanks catch!" Marcus ordered, sliding the side door open and preparing to leap onto the rocks.

"I'm going with you, Detective," Maya said, her voice leaving no room for argument as she stepped out onto the wet deck, her black velvet dress damp from the sea spray. "Julian is a coward, but he is a calculated coward. He won't wait to be rescued unless he has something left to bargain with."

Marcus didn't waste time arguing. He tossed her a heavy waterproof utility jacket, which she slipped over her shoulders, covering the velvet dress before leaping nimbly onto the slippery, barnacle-encrusted rocks beside him.

The air grew intensely hot as they scrambled upward toward the tilted deck of the wrecked yacht. The sliding glass door of the main salon had blown off its tracks, revealing an interior knee-deep in seawater and shattered glass.

"Julian! Chloe!" Marcus shouted, sweeping his tactical flashlight through the smoke-filled cabin.

A weak cough echoed from beneath the overturned mahogany chart table. Marcus rushed forward, kicking aside a fallen navigation monitor, and hauled Julian Vance out by the collar of his ruined designer suit. Julian’s face was smeared with soot and blood from a gash across his forehead. His breath came in ragged, panicked gasps, his usual arrogance entirely stripped away, leaving only a pathetic, trembling shell of a man.

"Get me out of here... please... my leg... I think it's broken," Julian whimpered, clutching at Marcus’s tactical vest with soot-stained fingers.

"You're not going anywhere except a federal holding cell, Julian," Marcus said coldly, hoisting him up and handing him over to a Coast Guard auxiliary officer who had just arrived in a secondary dinghy.

Maya stepped past them into the wreckage, her eyes scanning the debris-strewn salon. In the corner, huddled against the bulkhead near the shattered panoramic windows, sat Chloe Miller. She was clutching her stomach, rocking back and forth, letting out soft, genuine cries of pain as seawater lapped around her ankles.

Maya walked over and stood above her, looking down with an expression of profound, detached pity.

"Maya... please... help me," Chloe sobbed, looking up with wide, tear-filled eyes. "The baby... something is wrong... the impact..."

"You played a very dangerous game with amateur stakes, Chloe," Maya said softly, kneeling down on one knee despite the rising water. She reached out and gently brushed a damp strand of blonde hair away from Chloe’s pale forehead. "You thought you were stepping into my life, but you merely stepped into a trap I laid for Julian six months ago."

Chloe stopped crying for a fraction of a second, her eyes widening in sheer terror. "What... what do you mean?"

"Did you really think Julian didn't have another family before you?" Maya whispered, her voice dropping into a chilling register. "Did you really think the foundation embezzlement was his first?"

Before Chloe could answer, the yacht’s primary electrical generator groaned, sparked violently, and died completely, plunging the wrecked salon into absolute darkness save for the flickering orange glow of the burning fuel on the water outside.

And then, from the shadows near the back cabin door, a slow, deliberate round of applause echoed through the smoke.
