Chapter 2 - The Audit of Shadows

The heavy oak doors of the Vance estate closed behind Maya with a muffled thud, cutting off the chaotic shouting of the gala guests and the stern, authoritative voices of federal agents. Stepping out onto the rain-slicked cobblestone driveway, Maya inhaled the sharp, damp scent of the Pacific Northwest air. Her vintage chauffeured Town Car idled quietly by the curb. As she reached for the handle, the passenger door swung open from the inside, revealing Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, despite the shared surname—holding a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax. Marcus’s sharp eyes scanned Maya’s expression, searching for the cracks of a breaking heart. He found only steel.

"You timed that entrance with theatrical precision, Mrs. Vance," Marcus murmured, stepping out into the drizzle and offering her his black umbrella.

"Precision is the only currency my husband understands, Detective," Maya replied, sliding gracefully into the leather-lined interior of the car.

Marcus followed, pulling the door shut to block out the distant wail of sirens echoing down the tree-lined street. He dropped the heavy envelope onto her lap. Inside were documents that detailed far more than an extramarital affair. They outlined a complex, multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme siphon-ed directly from the company’s philanthropic foundation accounts—funds meant for pediatric cancer research, redirected cleanly into offshore accounts registered in Chloe Miller’s name.

"The federal indictment was signed three hours ago," Marcus said, leaning back against the door. "Julian thought he was untouchable because the board members were entirely in his pocket. He didn’t realize that financial crimes units don't care about board loyalty."

"Julian has always suffered from a profound lack of imagination," Maya said, flipping through the ledger pages with an unhurried, clinical detachment. "He thought buying silence with corporate bonuses was a permanent solution."

"We froze his personal accounts, his corporate holdings, and every trust linked to his social security number," Marcus continued, studying her profile in the dim dashboard illumination. "However, there’s a complication. Approximately four point two million dollars moved out of the foundation yesterday afternoon, just hours before the gala. It didn’t go offshore. It went into a domestic holding entity that requires a dual signature to release."

Maya paused, her thumb tracing the edge of a signature block bearing her own forged initials. Julian had tried to set her up as the fall-guy for the theft.

"A dual signature," Maya repeated softly. "Which means the bank still believes I am his legal partner in crime."

"Exactly," Marcus said grimly. "If you don't sign an affidavit disavowing knowledge of that transfer within forty-eight hours, federal prosecutors will name you as a co-conspirator in the embezzlement ring."

Maya stared out the rain-streaked window, watching the tail lights of police cruisers paint the wet asphalt in streaks of violent red and blue. The trap Julian had laid for her was closing, but he had miscalculated who held the key.

"Take me to the bank, Marcus," Maya said, turning her head with a chilling smile. "Let’s see how much Julian loves his assistant when the vault door slams shut."
