Chapter 6 - The Terminal Interception

The heavy tactical boots of federal agents echoed down the concrete hallway, instantly shattering the controlled atmosphere Arthur Sterling had so carefully constructed. Three armed marshals rounded the corner, their weapons held at a disciplined low-ready position, led by a stern-faced regional director who didn't even glance at the corporate attorney blocking the vault entrance.
"Mr. Sterling, step away from the threshold immediately," the director commanded, flashing a gold badge before Arthur could raise a legal objection. "You are currently obstructing a federal asset seizure under Title 18."
Arthur’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. He tried to maintain his composure, squaring his shoulders and adjusting his glasses with trembling fingers. "This is completely irregular! I filed an emergency injunction with the Ninth Circuit less than twenty minutes ago—"
"The Ninth Circuit just dismissed your injunction five minutes ago, counselor, when our cyber-crime unit traced the digital origin of your filing straight to a VPN server registered under Veritas Holdings—hosted inside Chloe Miller’s apartment," Detective Marcus Vance interrupted, stepping past Arthur and joining the federal team in the hallway. Marcus looked down at the stunned attorney with undisguised contempt. "Obstruction of justice is a federal offense, Arthur. Shall we add conspiracy to commit wire fraud to your billable hours today?"
Arthur stepped back instinctively, his briefcase slipping slightly in his grip as he realized the chessboard had completely flipped beneath his feet. He cast a desperate, venomous look toward Maya, who stood calmly in the doorway of the vault, her black velvet dress illuminated by the harsh overhead emergency lights.
"You think you’ve won something tonight, Maya," Arthur hissed quietly, leaning in close enough so only she could hear. "Julian already transferred the primary liquid capital out of the jurisdiction. Even if the feds seize the company, you'll walk away with nothing while Julian watches from a beach where extradition treaties don't exist."
"Julian is currently staring at TSA security agents while his private jet sits empty on the tarmac at Sea-Tac, Arthur," Maya replied softly, her tone entirely devoid of anger. "He never reaches international airspace without a valid passport override code—a code that requires my biometric authorization to transmit."
Arthur froze, the blood draining entirely from his face. "You... you blocked the flight plan?"
"I didn't block it. I simply let him run," Maya said, stepping past him into the hallway and smoothing the fabric of her dress. "A cornered animal always runs toward its deepest instincts. Julian went straight to the airstrip, exactly as I anticipated."
Without waiting for Arthur’s response, Maya turned and began walking briskly toward the elevator lobby, her heels clicking against the concrete floor with absolute authority. Marcus fell into step beside her, signaling two agents to secure Arthur Sterling pending formal questioning.
"We need to move, Maya. If Julian realizes the transponder code is locked out, he’s going to panic and try to make a run for the maritime docks," Marcus said as the elevator doors slid open with a smooth, pneumatic chime.
"Let him try," Maya said, stepping inside the mirrored car and pressing the button for the underground parking garage. "A man carrying four million dollars in cash and a pregnant accomplice cannot hide in a cargo ship without leaving a trail of broken promises."

The elevator doors closed, sealing them in silence as the car descended rapidly toward the subterranean parking level where their next move awaited. But as the digital floor indicator ticked down to B-3, the elevator jolted violently, sparks showering from the ceiling panel as the car ground to a screeching, premature halt halfway between floors.
