The Quiet Threshold / Chapter 3 / 15

The Severed Tether

Evelyn stared at Hannah’s outstretched hand, her jaw clenching so hard the muscle beneath her cheek ticked violently.

"I am Greg’s mother," Evelyn whispered, stepping forward until her coat brushed Hannah’s arm. "I held a key to his home before you existed, and I will hold one long after you are gone."

Hannah did not blink. She held Clara firmly with her left arm and reached with her right hand into her sweatshirt pocket, pulling out her mobile phone. She held it up. The screen displayed an active call to the local municipal police dispatch, the timer ticking at forty-five seconds.

"The dispatcher is on the line, Evelyn," Hannah stated with absolute clarity. "You entered without knocking, using an unauthorized key, and refused to leave when instructed by the resident. I have one sentence to say: 'I have an unwanted intruder refusing to vacate my home with a newborn present.' Do you want the high-society columns to run the story of Evelyn Vance being escorted from her son's driveway in handcuffs?"

Evelyn froze. For the first time in her life, the illusion of her total dominance shattered against the plain, unvarnished wall of consequence.

With a venomous sneer, Evelyn ripped the silver key from her ring and threw it onto the polished floor. It clattered against the baseboard, sliding to a halt beside the crib.

"You have destroyed my son’s family," Evelyn spat, turning on her heel. "When he walks out on you, don't you dare come crying to my porch."

Hannah didn't answer. She watched in silence as the older woman stormed down the hallway, the heavy front door slamming shut behind her.

Only when the rumble of Evelyn’s luxury sedan faded down the driveway did Hannah allow her knees to buckle. She sank onto the rocking chair in the corner of the nursery, wrapping both arms around Clara, burying her face into the baby’s swaddle as silent, hot tears finally broke through her exhausted resolve.
