The Quiet Threshold / Chapter 10 / 15

The First Step

Two months passed.

Autumn painted the suburban trees in vibrant shades of copper and gold. Clara was thriving, her cheeks turning round and rosy, her weight climbing steadily into healthy percentiles.

One afternoon, while Hannah was organizing Clara's baby clothes in the sunlit bedroom, the doorbell rang with a gentle, polite chime.

Hannah checked the security monitor on the wall. Standing on the porch was not Evelyn or Penny, but a delivery courier holding a small parcel wrapped in brown paper, alongside a young woman in business attire standing near a modest sedan.

Hannah walked to the front door, unlocking it with her passcode. She stepped onto the porch.

The young woman turned around. It was Penny.

She looked remarkably different. Her designer clothes were gone, replaced by a simple navy blazer and slacks. Her hair was neatly tied back, her face devoid of the frantic, theatrical anger that had defined her for years. She looked tired, her hands clutching a folder tightly against her chest, but there was a grounded, authentic reality to her posture that Hannah had never seen before.

"Hannah," Penny said quietly, keeping her distance at the bottom of the porch steps. "I... I asked the courier to deliver the parcel. But I wanted to stand here myself."

Hannah held Clara closer, observing her sister-in-law with cautious, neutral stillness. "What is this, Penny?"

"It’s the signed lease for the West End apartment," Penny said, her voice trembling slightly with swallowed pride. "And my employment contract with the logistics firm. I started as an inventory clerk last Monday."
